The Zoning Inspector enforces the City’s zoning code and ensures development projects comply with approved plans and land use regulations. Responsibilities include field investigations of zoning complaints, managing enforcement cases, performing final inspections, collaborating with the Zoning Administrator and other City departments, assisting property owners and developers in navigating permitting processes, supporting policy development, staff training, public communication, and providing documentation and testimony in court when required.
Responsibilities- Enforce zoning code and ensure compliance of development projects.
- Conduct field investigations of zoning complaints and initiate enforcement actions.
- Manage enforcement cases from initiation through resolution.
- Perform final inspections to confirm projects meet approved site plans.
- Collaborate with the Zoning Administrator and other City departments on zoning matters.
- Assist property owners, developers, and residents in understanding zoning requirements.
- Support policy development, staff training, and public communication related to zoning.
- Prepare documentation and provide testimony in court regarding zoning violations when necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, or a related field AND 6 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, code enforcement, water engineering, building regulations or civil engineering.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, or a related field AND 8 years of experience in the same fields.
- High school diploma AND 10 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, code enforcement, water engineering, building regulations or civil engineering.
Degree must be from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or an equivalent region. A combination of experiences related to land use, architecture, engineering or construction techniques is strongly preferred. Experience or education in water engineering or sustainability is preferred. ICC certification in listed/related fields is also preferred.

- Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
- Background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass the applicable background investigation.
- Final appointment is contingent upon passing a job-related medical examination, including a drug screen. Applicants offered employment must also pass a nicotine screening and remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
