What you’ll do
The Environmental Review Division (ERD) is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s environmental review (ER) Program. You will work as part of a team that functions as the corporate authority on environmental and impact assessments.
- Manage and/or participate in federal and harmonized environmental or impact assessment (IA) processes for assigned projects.
- Conduct technical reviews of assigned projects.
- Participate in meetings with proponents, environmental groups, other interest groups, other levels of government, Indigenous communities, and members of the public on EA/IA issues.
- Assist in preparing materials for the Directorate’s participation in public Commission hearings and meetings including EA reports, Commission Member Documents, briefing materials, and presentations.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining the corporate program for meeting the obligations of the Impact Assessment Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012, Environmental Protection Reviews under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, and other ER processes.
- Participate in and/or organize public outreach and Indigenous engagement sessions, including town halls, meetings, and information sessions.
Additional tasks for an ER officer may include working collaboratively with other federal, provincial and/or municipal governments on environmental related matters (e.g., climate change initiative, regional assessment studies, gender‑based analysis of programs and processes) and Memoranda of Understanding with other government departments and agencies. You may also be responsible for contributing to annual reports to Parliament and to the Commission.
Essential QualificationsEducation: University degree in environmental sciences, management or a related discipline (e.g., geography, biology, environmental engineering, environmental policy), or equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.

- Participating in meetings with different stakeholders such as proponents, environmental groups, other interest groups, other levels of government, Indigenous communities, or members of the public.
- Participating or supporting public outreach and Indigenous engagement.
- Participating in special projects in support of the Directorate’s mandate, roles and responsibilities.
REG 6:
- Managing and/or participating in environmental reviews and impact assessment processes.
- Leading and/or supporting the preparation of clear and concise written and oral briefing materials, reports and presentations.
- Participating in multidisciplinary project teams.
- Collaborating and/or participating in meetings with different stakeholders such as proponents, environmental groups, other interest groups, other levels of government, Indigenous communities, or members of the public.
- Conducting public outreach and Indigenous engagement.
- Leading or participating in special projects in support of the Directorate’s mandate, roles and responsibilities.
Knowledge of:
- Canadian legislation, policies, standards and guidelines applicable to impact and environmental assessment as well as environmental protection (including NSCA, IAA, CEAA 2012, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act, provincial and territorial legislation and policies on environmental assessment).
- Impact and environmental assessment methodologies and techniques.
- Principles and practices for consultation with Indigenous Peoples.
- Subject matter related to environmental reviews including environmental protection and radiation protection for facilities and activities regulated by the CNSC.
- Project management principles, processes and tools.
Ability:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including preparing briefing materials and technical reports for various audiences.
