The Ottawa Catholic School Board is currently seeking casual American Sign Language Interpreters. Possible work addresses are available in our school directory.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the school principal, the Interpreter is responsible for:
- Providing interpreting and other support services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students.
- Facilitating communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system.
- Offering tutoring and/or note‑taking services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students when necessary.
- Participating in team meetings and assisting the classroom teacher in fostering positive attitudes toward deafness.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Secondary school diploma.
- Three‑year community college diploma in sign language interpreting.
- 1.5 years of related experience.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to establish rapport and work with individuals on a one‑to‑one basis.
- Initiative and commitment.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Individuals with an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) and the Ontario Interpreter Services (O.I.S.).
- NVCI, CPR and First Aid certification.
Annual (or Hourly) Salary: Hourly rate of $36.56 plus 4% vacation pay. The hour‑rate effective as of September 1, 2025, is $37.56 an hour.
