About the position

Duties
Whether the position is in headquarters, a regional office or a Transport Canada Centre, it offers a diverse range of tasks that fosters professional growth and provides opportunities to make a meaningful impact in the marine sector. As a manager, you will manage the financial and human resources and ensure that business results of your programs are delivered. You will contribute to building cohesive, high-performing teams by managing performance, providing constructive and respectful feedback, fostering employee engagement and supporting individual and organizational success through continuous learning and development and challenging goals.

You will manage program performance, risk and evaluation by updating, tracking, analyzing, performing quality assurance, reporting and measuring objectives, outcomes, plans and policies. You will provide sound recommendations supported by legislation, facts, data and best practices to inform senior management’s decision-making on programs that may be related, among others, to oversight, compliance, enforcement, navigation safety, and seafarer certification. You will consult and liaise with colleagues, senior management and interested parties to establish relationships, chair or participate in national technical working groups, participate in the development and implementation of engagement and consultative networks, identify, analyze and resolve issues, and support and direct teams and working groups.

You may represent the Department at the International Maritime Organization, International Labour Organization, Arctic Council and other regional/national/international forums, committees, working groups, boards and councils with public and private sector organizations and communities, including delivering technical presentations.
Work environment
This position is office-based and generally does not involve the conduct of oversight activities and inspection in the field. While the work involves national and international travel and overtime, most days you’ll be home at the end of your workday. Note that office on-site presence follows Government of Canada directive. While you might encounter challenging situations as part of your work, the rewarding feeling of contributing to the safety of Canadians and the protection of the environment makes it worthwhile.

We understand that transition to the public service or a new organization may be challenging. We care about our staff’s well-being and development and that’s why we’ve created an onboarding program with a buddy system to accompany you during your first weeks. We are constantly working to improve our training programs in order to support and promote the learning and growth needs of our staff.
