Location:

Administration Building. Work year: 260 days.

Schedule:

40 hours per week, Monday – Friday. Work status:
Full-Time Classified Exempt.

Reports to:

Superintendent.

Position Summary

The Community and Media Engagement Specialist will support Sheridan School District No. 2 by managing public relations, strategic communications, marketing, and community awareness activities. This role is vital in enhancing community understanding of the district's mission, goals, objectives, services, and activities while providing consistent communication support to all school sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Community Engagement
  • Attend district and school events, including evening/weekend programs, to represent the district.
  • Participate in DAC, SAC, and School Board meetings.
  • Help coordinate and promote special events across the district and schools.
  • Monitor and report on community engagement metrics to assess and refine strategies.
  • Handle sensitive material confidentially.
  • Prepare consistent communications on the District and school level highlights.
  • Train school district teams on effective communication strategies.
  • Coach and support front office teams on communication tools and strategies.
Communication
  • Develop written, video, and graphical content for the district website and social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, Linked In, Facebook).
  • Write and produce bi-monthly district newsletters.
  • Create and maintain strategic publications, such as press releases, brochures, fact sheets, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with schools and departments to enhance communication plans and align messaging.
  • Serve as the district's website facilitator, ensuring content is accurate and updated, and support school teams regarding school websites.
  • Work with IT to comply with web and technology policies.
  • Coordinate media relations and crisis communication strategies.
  • Train staff on communication toolkits.
  • Establish and train on standard operating procedures for communications protocols.
Media and Marketing
  • Serve as the contact person for media inquiries.
  • Produce occasional videos to promote district initiatives and events.
  • Develop and implement social-first content strategies to drive engagement while maintaining brand identity.
  • Create graphics, templates, and designs for marketing materials.
  • Support communication from the Superintendent to emphasize district messaging and initiatives.
  • Create a monthly District newsletter.
  • Process and track CORA requests in compliance with state law.
  • Coordinate records collection with district departments.
  • Review and redact records as required by law.
  • Ensure compliance with FERPA and confidentiality requirements.
  • Serve as the district's CORA contact.
  • Maintain records, request logs, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel on complex requests.
  • Monitor changes to public records laws and procedures.
  • Organize records for efficient retrieval.
  • Prepare reports on CORA compliance and response timelines.
Other Duties
  • Attend Board of Education, district-wide, school-based, and community meetings to gather and share district-related information.
  • Translations — responsible for translating board agendas and district communications.
  • Responsible for scheduling interpreters for DAC, Board meetings, and parent meetings when requested.
  • Create a district-wide document for staff/leaders to request interpreters.
  • Provide interpretation devices for family liaisons to use in their buildings to support interpretations (school assemblies, family nights, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field, with an emphasis on education.
  • Proficiency in operating cameras, personal computers, printers, and communication software Photography.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Accreditation in public relations by a national professional association.
  • Bilingual/Spanish skills are highly desirable.
