Pay Range: $65.09 – $76.14 per hour.
Position SummaryThe Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at CHEO provides comprehensive, state‑of‑the‑art critical care for children and adolescents aged 0–18. The PICU is a 13‑bed unit that treats a wide range of complex medical and surgical conditions, including congenital heart disease, respiratory failure, neurosurgery, trauma, sepsis, and multi‑organ dysfunction. This role is for an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) who will work closely with attending physicians and multidisciplinary teams to deliver advanced patient‑centered care.
Responsibilities- Authorize, facilitate, and coordinate admissions, transfers, leaves of absence, and discharges for PICU patients.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, document findings in the electronic health record, and interpret diagnostic results.
- Order and prioritize diagnostic tests, initiate procedures, and perform critical‑care skills such as intubation, central‑line insertion, and chest‑tube placement per competency.
- Oversee advanced life‑support equipment, including ventilators and cardiac monitors.
- Prescribe and administer pharmacological treatments, including controlled substances and complex medication regimes.
- Participate in Emergency Response teams (ED, inpatient units, Rapid Response team SPOT) and extramural consults.
- Develop holistic care plans with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members; monitor and adjust plans based on outcomes.
- Consult or refer to specialist or allied health providers as needed.
- Communicate diagnoses, treatment plans, and disease‑specific education to patients and caregivers.
- Coordinate transfers of care and collaborate with case‑management and multidisciplinary meetings.
- Engage in health promotion, disease prevention, and education initiatives (pamphlets, lectures, program development).
- Lead specialty‑specific program initiatives and quality‑improvement projects.
- Act as a change agent for continuous improvement in care delivery.
- Serve on organizational committees and provide best‑practice expertise.
- Offer formal and informal teaching to clinical staff and learners; mentor NP students.
- Conduct and support specialty‑specific research and participate as a Clinical Investigator with the CHEO Research Institute.
- Master’s degree in nursing or an equivalent field (essential).
- Nurse Practitioner certification from a recognized Canadian program (essential).
- Current registration in the Extended Class of the College of Nurses of Ontario (RN‑EC) (essential).
- Current Basic Life Support certification for health‑care providers (essential).
- Minimum 3–5 years of RN experience in a pediatric specialty (essential).
- Minimum 2 years of NP experience in a pediatric intensive‑care setting (preferred).
- Membership in the Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario or the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (preferred).
- Professional liability protection (preferred).
- Experience with education, program development, and evaluation (essential).
- Self‑directed, independent work style and ability to adapt in a fast‑paced environment (essential).
- Excellent communication, interprofessional relationship skills, and clinical leadership (essential).
- Proficiency in electronic technology, including MS Office, EHR, and virtual platforms (essential).
- Positive Psychology Record / Vulnerable Sector Check (essential).
- Shift work – 7½ to 12 hours per shift with nights, weekends, and holidays.
