Position Information
This temporary position, until approximately October 15, 2027, is for a Clinical Services team member at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). It offers an opportunity to grow and develop clinical competencies in a fast‑paced, acute inpatient cardiac care environment.
Rotation / ShiftsDays, Monday to Friday, 8‑hour shifts.
What You Will Do- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families to facilitate assessment, diagnosis, management, and therapeutic interventions within the NP scope of practice.
- Optimize patients’ health conditions prior to admission to hospital.
- Prevent, early identify, and manage complications while hospitalized.
- Manage and optimize existing co‑morbid illnesses in hospital.
- Optimize pain management.
- Implement activities related to prevention and treatment of nosocomial complications (e.g., pressure ulcers, delirium, falls, restraint‑related injury).
- Promote and perform safety initiatives (e.g., medication reconciliation).
- Plan for and facilitate timely and safe discharge and transfer of accountability to community caregivers.
- Provide enhanced communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members, especially at transition points in care (admission, transfer, discharge).
- Discharge patients from inpatient care.
- Participate and lead direct/indirect patient care activities, including but not limited to patient/family and/or staff education.
- Remove pacer wires, remove chest tubes, provide wound care, attend interdisciplinary rounds, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Master’s degree in Nursing.
- Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current certification/licensure as a Nurse Practitioner RN (Extended Class).
- Two (2) years in acute care.
- Minimum of 3–5 years relevant clinical experience in acute cardiac care with extensive experience in cardiology and cardiac surgery environments.
- Licensed to prescribe controlled substances.
- Experience working independently within an interdisciplinary team.
- Member of RNAO and NPAO.
- Demonstrated organizational, conceptual, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated advanced practice skills and competence in interpersonal relationships, problem solving, collaboration, and innovation.
- Effective and concise communication, both orally and in writing.
- Eligible to work in Canada.
- Minimum two years experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Advanced Practice Nurse.
- Certificate in Cardiovascular Nursing.
- Proficiency in English and French oral expression (advanced) and comprehension (advanced).
