Nurse Practitioner, Infectious Disease and Allergy, Ambulatory Care

Compensation: $65.09 - $76.14

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) at CHEO is a Registered Nurse with advanced education (Masters or Doctoral level) and experience to provide personalized, high‑quality care to children and youth. NPs are regulated by the College of Nurses of Ontario, hold an RN (Extended Class) license, and are authorized for diagnosis, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and performing medical procedures.

The NP serves both autonomously and collaboratively, integrating nursing and medical knowledge while embodying leadership, education, research, and ongoing professional development.

Working closely with the Division of Infectious Diseases, Immunology and Allergy, the NP will provide comprehensive, patient‑ and family‑centered care to immunocompromised, medically complex children and youths, including those with inborn errors of immunity, chronic immunosuppressive therapy, solid organ or hematopoietic stem‑cell transplant, and infants with significant perinatal infections. The NP will also offer consultation and advice regarding immunization of at‑risk patients.

Direct Clinical Practice – Patient Care

• Perform and document comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking and physical examination.
• Develop a plan of care collaboratively with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team.
• Order and prioritize diagnostic tests; initiate procedures as needed.
• Interpret laboratory, radiology, and other test results.
• Prescribe pharmacological and other therapeutic interventions.
• Monitor treatment, modify plans, and evaluate outcomes.
• Communicate diagnoses, treatment plans, and disease‑specific education to patients and caregivers.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to create holistic care plans.
• Provide follow‑up care for patients requiring regular visits.
• Perform skills and procedures within clinical competency.
• Address socioeconomic needs of patients and caregivers in clinical decision‑making.

Direct Clinical Practice – Care Coordination & Administration

• Consult and refer to specialist providers or health disciplines as needed.
• Document all patient work‑up and care in the EMR.
• Coordinate admission, transfers, leaves of absence, and discharge for admitted patients.
• Engage in clinical case management via direct patient communication, multidisciplinary meetings, and clinic visits.
• Participate in health promotion and disease prevention initiatives.

Leadership

• Identify, lead, and implement specialty‑specific program initiatives and improvements.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and organizational committees.
• Act as a change agent to enhance care delivery within the specialty.
• Demonstrate clinical leadership and undertake opportunities for academic affiliation.

Education

• Provide formal and informal teaching opportunities to clinical staff and learners.
• Mentor NP students from various programs and institutions.
• Promote ongoing educational opportunities with universities and colleges.

Research

• Identify and incorporate evidence into practice‑based decision making.
• Lead and participate in specialty‑specific research projects.
• Advocate for quality improvement through evidence‑based change.
