Kate McInturff Fellowship in Gender Justice – Summer 2026 Summary
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (National Office) is looking for 1 (one) research intern to assist our Making Women Count program in its work to develop policy solutions to advance gender justice, with a particular focus on the rights and needs of marginalized communities.
About Making Women CountThe CCPA’s Making Women Count research program reflects the organization’s commitment to creating progressive policy alternatives for advancing gender equality in Canada. The program works in collaboration with women’s groups and gender equality organizations to identify areas where women and gender‑diverse people are facing barriers to their individual and collective well‑being. The program’s goal is to advance systemic solutions for addressing gender disparities, targeting those groups experiencing the greatest barriers.
Aboutthe Fellowship
The board of the CCPA established the Kate McInturff Fellowship Fund in 2019 to honour the work and legacy of Kate McInturff, the first director of the Making Women Count program. The fund’s goal is to foster the growth and development of young feminist researchers working in diverse communities across the country.
ResponsibilitesUnder the supervision of a Senior Researcher, the Fellowship holder will conduct analysis of social and economic issues, as assigned, and produce related public policy materials. Tasks include:
- Researching and analyzing social and economic issues and their policy dimensions to create research materials in support of the Making Women Count research agenda
- Assisting with the compilation of communication products (e.g., data visualizations; policy briefs; reports; social media content)
- Researching and liaising with various networks regarding current and emerging issues and changing legislation as required
- Assisting with event organization and logistics (e.g., care economy roundtable)
- Working as a member of, and contributing to, the broader CCPA team
- Planning, researching, writing 1‑2 policy briefs and/or blogs
We are seeking applications from upper‑level students or graduates with strong writing, research, and communication skills and a keen interest in public policy, gender equality and intersectional perspectives. The successful candidate will be:
- Familiar with public policy in Canada and intersectional feminist perspectives;
- Experienced in social science research including, but not limited to, literature reviews, jurisdictional scans, and data analysis;
- Comfortable in working with MS Excel, extracting and interpreting data, creating effective data visualizations;
- An excellent writer who is able to synthesize complex ideas and policy information and produce accessible research products on deadline;
- An excellent organizer capable of working both independently and with a team in a diverse and inclusive workplace;
- Knowledge of national and regional gender equality or related social justice / labour organizations is an asset.
This is a 420 hour summer contract position (35 hours per week, for 12 weeks). The scheduling and distribution of hours are flexible, with meetings happening during typical daytime hours. We are open to accommodating schedules that recognize other commitments and needs. The contracted hours must be completed between May 19, 2026 and August 28, 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for tracking and managing work hours in conjunction with the project supervisor.
The chosen candidate can choose to work remotely, with the support of the National CCPA team, or work from the Ottawa office if desired for one or more days, pending approval of the office manager.
The fellowship will pay $25.00 per hour, including 4% vacation pay, for a maximum of 420 hours.
