• Conducting weekly Air Effluent Monitoring (AEM) sample analysis, including gamma spectrometry, gross alpha/beta, and tritium counting.
• Logging and inputting sample analysis data into the branch’s Laboratory Information Management System (Labworks).
• Helping support (Labworks) maintenance.
• Updating the system to ensure optimized functioning of the data repository system.
• Calibrating and procuring equipment to ensure availability of adequate monitoring equipment.
• Providing environmental monitoring support to the branch and other CNL groups to help ensure compliance with effluent monitoring.
• Participating in inter-laboratory studies to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data analysis methods and results.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

• Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology or equivalent formal education in a field relevant to the position (e.g. Nuclear Science and Radiation Safety, Environmental Technician/Engineering, Chemistry).
    
    - OR -
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five (5) years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
• Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working in a work environment that requires following established procedures, ideally in quality assurance and quality control environments.
  • Experience completing radiological analyses (e.g. gamma spectrometry, gross alpha/beta, and tritium counting) is desirable.
  • Functional knowledge of maintaining a database system or Excel spreadsheets would be an asset.
  • Experience related to lab equipment and electronics troubleshooting, problem analysis, and problem assessment would be an asset.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Adequate knowledge of and ability to work with potentially low levels of radioactive materials.
  • CNL’s Radiation Protection Group 2 training and knowledge is required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of gamma spectrometry, gas flow proportional counting, photomultiplier and Geiger-based radiological instrumentation, and liquid scintillation counting.
  • Some understanding of laboratory Quality Assurance and Quality Control protocols.
  • Ability to demonstrate fine attention to details and critical thinking.
  • Excellent organizational skills and record-keeping.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to follow and assist in developing new procedures.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities pertaining to electronic repair, and troubleshooting skills with complex analogue and digital circuits would be an asset.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

• Handling small filter samples.
• Troubleshooting equipment could involve pinch points.
• It may require moderate physical effort and a fitness level to perform tasks.
• Mainly laboratory work but could include fieldwork to support EMB’s electronics technicians.
• When performing field work, may be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing in all seasons and weather conditions.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
