The Lead Construction Technician performs inspections and staff oversight on significant projects and will lead other inspection staff and/or projects themselves.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees inspection and testing activities for one or more projects
  • Provides oversight and develops skills of inspection staff
  • Inputs data into pre-written computer programs
  • Operates computer systems to run reports or calculations
  • Interprets construction plans and specifications
  • Observes construction operations to assess conformance to plans and specifications
  • Performs construction materials testing, develops budget estimates and proposals
  • Provides clear written documentation of activities and site conditions
  • Communicates effectively with staff, contractors, and clients
  • Works independently, managing staff on projects regularly
  • Identifies issues, determines solutions, and implements steps
  • Participates in training and maintains relevant certifications
  • Documents work and expenses in the company system
  • Seeks increased responsibilities and collaborates with management
  • Trains technicians and leads improvement initiatives
  • Maintains client relationships and develops new business opportunities
  • This position may have direct reports

Qualifications

Experience

  • 8+ years in construction inspection or trades
  • Experience with public agencies or consulting firms is a plus

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Effective communication at all levels
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Time management and self-starting ability
  • Reliable vehicle for site travel
  • Physical requirements:

    lifting up to 50 lbs, walking stairs, flexible hours, travel including nights, outdoor conditions

Education

  • High School diploma or GED
  • KDOT Inspection certification
  • Additional experience in engineering or construction management is advantageous
