Job Description

About Mariner

At Mariner, we’re more than a financial services firm — we’re a trusted partner for our clients and a growth platform for our people. Our mission is to help clients achieve their goals through smart, ethical, and innovative solutions. We foster a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture where legal is not a back‑office function, but a strategic driver of business success. We believe in investing in our team with cutting‑edge tools, professional growth opportunities, and a flexible work environment that values results over rigid rules.

The Opportunity

This is a chance to join a high‑impact legal team at the heart of a growing, forward‑thinking financial services company. As a Legal Counsel (Generalist), you will partner closely with business leaders across the enterprise touching every corner of the business providing sophisticated, solutions‑oriented advice on matters spanning the full corporate lifecycle—including contract negotiation and management, litigation support, regulatory compliance and risk assessment/mitigation, and a variety of other legal matters.

This is a unique opportunity for a lawyer who relishes variety, moves effortlessly between big‑picture strategy and detailed execution, and is eager to add measurable value on Day 1 — both as a trusted advisor and a roll‑up‑your‑sleeves operator.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as a trusted adviser to executives, in‑house attorneys, and business partners by offering practical, business‑focused legal guidance on corporate, transactional, litigation, and regulatory matters.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret a broad spectrum of contracts and agreements, such as purchase agreements, services agreements, nondisclosure agreements, referral and independent‑contractor agreements, real estate agreements, and corporate organizational documents.
  • Provide legal support for a variety of business initiatives and projects, working closely with cross‑functional teams to ensure alignment with company objectives.
  • Monitor statutes, regulations, and case law affecting the company; distill developments into clear, actionable guidance for internal stakeholders and assist in designing policies, procedures, and training to maintain compliance.
  • Lead special projects and assume additional responsibilities as the needs of the Legal Department evolve within Mariner’s dynamic growth environment.
  • Step in to support the team on any task, big or small, demonstrating a willingness to take on all types of work as needed.
  • Build deep relationships with teams across Mariner to anticipate legal needs and proactively provide solutions.
  • Support corporate governance, board materials, and entity management.
  • Contribute to M&A due diligence and deal deliverables.
  • Improve legal processes, templates, and knowledge management.
  • Leverage AI‑enabled tools for contract review, regulatory monitoring, and legal research to accelerate delivery.

What You Will Bring

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school; active license to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in a reputable law firm and/or in‑house legal department, with demonstrable depth in general corporate and contract matters as well as comfort navigating multiple legal areas.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple high‑stakes matters simultaneously, deliver crisp work product under tight timelines, and communicate complex concepts clearly to legal and non‑legal audiences alike.
  • Impeccable organizational skills, exacting attention to detail, and a self‑starter mentality that drives proactive identification and resolution of issues.
  • Strong ethical compass, sound judgment, and unwavering commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Prior exposure to the financial services sector (including SEC/FINRA regulation) is highly desirable and will allow for quicker impact, though it is not a prerequisite.
  • A business‑first problem solving and growth mentality — you see opportunities where others see roadblocks.
  • An exceptional communicator who is clear, consistent, and proactive—providing timely updates, tailoring…
