Position: Direct Care Worker (Non-Meds)

Key Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Direct Care Worker (non-meds) provides direct care to community residents, primarily for activities of daily living, and assists with housekeeping, laundry, mealtime service, and other duties assigned by the Executive Director.

The following is a general list of key job duties and responsibilities. The list is not inclusive; additional duties may be assigned by an authorized supervisor.

  • Assist residents in and out of bed and into a wheelchair according to procedure. This may require assistance from another aide or the use of a gait belt.
  • Assist residents in bathing.
  • Assist residents in dressing or undressing.
  • Assist residents to the bathroom and provide peri-care as needed.
  • Take and record vital signs of residents according to the community schedule and policies.
  • Assist residents to the dining area for meals; may be required to assist with feeding.
  • Strip bedding and replace with clean linens per schedule or as needed.
  • Assist in personal grooming of residents as needed.
  • Turn residents as needed when designated on the care plan.
  • Clean bedpans and manage catheter bags as required.
  • Document and report information regarding residents as instructed. Documentation must be completed prior to leaving the shift.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly med room.
  • Provide shift reports on resident status as required.
  • Provide housekeeping/cleaning services as scheduled by the Executive Director, including resident areas and common areas of the community.
  • Provide laundry and linen service and deliver all resident laundry as designated.
  • Perform minor maintenance and servicing on community equipment as instructed; monitor inventory of supplies.
  • Monitor personal and staff compliance with state and federal requirements including but not limited to blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, infection control, and fire safety.
  • Monitor residents’ rights and ensure respectful treatment.
  • Be available to work rotating weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements

The following is a general list of key job/physical requirements. Other requirements may be necessary as deemed by the Community.

  • Regular worksite attendance.
  • Complete at least 12 hours of in-service education approved and required by the community and regulatory departments.
  • Complete Relias assignments on time.
  • Successfully complete skills check-off with the RN annually.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with coworkers and other departments.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • If required to operate a motor vehicle for business purposes, comply with the Company’s Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Be able to work beyond normal hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies.
  • Be able to perform essential position functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull weights as specified: lift up to 10 lbs (often), 11–25 lbs (often), 26–50 lbs (frequently), over 50 lbs (frequently); carry up to 10 lbs (constantly), 11–25 lbs (occasionally), 26–50 lbs (occasionally), over 50 lbs (occasionally).
  • Reach above shoulder height, at shoulder height, and below shoulder height; push/pull movements regularly.
  • Hand manipulation including grasping, handling, and fingering (variable frequencies).
  • Other physical considerations: twisting, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and balancing; operating a vehicle or equipment as required.
  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and hostile individuals; adequate vision and hearing (or use of prosthetics) to perform duties.
