Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Roads and Drainage, the Traffic Technologist role is responsible for supporting and advancing the Town of The Blue Mountains’ strategic transportation initiatives and system-wide mobility goals. This position is focused on the engineering, analytical, and operational aspects of traffic safety; implementation of the Town’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP);
Speed and Community Safety programs; and the Town Transit and Parking Strategy.

The Traffic Technologist integrates technology-based solutions, traffic data analysis, municipal standards, and asset management practices to support roadway safety, enhance accessibility, and optimize road network performance. The incumbent will use systems such as City Works, GIS, and engineering analysis platforms to monitor trends, track inventory, support TOMRMS compliance, and maintain transparent and defensible municipal documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and support implementation of the Transportation Master Plan (TMP), focusing on multimodal safety improvements, speed management, pedestrian/cyclist connectivity, traffic calming, and corridor performance optimization.
  • Conduct technical traffic studies including collision reviews, speed and volume counts, gap analyses, intersection evaluations, Active Transportation audits, and school‑zone assessments.
  • Support implementation of the Town’s Community Safety Zone (CSZ) program, including data collection, prioritization and warrant evaluation, documentation of enforcement recommendations, and collaboration with OPP.
  • Provide guidance and support to the Crossing Guard program including assisting with interviews, training, scheduling, and preparing updates to training materials.
  • Lead the implementation of the Town’s Parking Strategy, including data collection, utilization metrics, seasonal/tourism parking assessments, technology evaluation, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Provide oversight of the Town’s transit agreement, including performance monitoring, coordination with service partners, and reporting on service delivery, compliance, and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations for roadway safety improvements including speed limit changes, pedestrian crossings, curb extensions, geometric realignments, pavement markings, signage plans, and traffic calming strategies.
  • Collect, verify, and analyze data using Miovision, Eco‑Counter, radar sensors, Bluetooth travel‑time devices, pneumatic counters, and GIS datasets to support informed engineering decisions.
  • Lead community engagement and public consultation related to road safety programs, TMP implementation, traffic calming proposals, and parking strategies, including preparation of presentation materials and attendance/presentation at public meetings.
  • Prepare technical reports, staff memos, and Council briefings summarizing methodology, findings, financial considerations, options, and safety impacts.
