Job Description & How to Apply Below
Spencer Engineering, founded in 1996, is a trusted leader in the design and support of mine hoisting systems, including hoists, service and production conveyances, braking systems, control systems, and all associated mechanical and electrical components. In 2023, Spencer Engineering was acquired by BESTECH, an innovative multi-disciplinary engineering services firm with over 30 years of proven success across a wide range of engineering disciplines.
Now operating as a specialized division under BESTECH, Spencer Engineering continues to deliver expert solutions through a dedicated team of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Designers, Technologists, Technicians, PLC Specialists, Project Coordinators, and Trainers.
At BESTECH, we believe in partnership—with our clients, our team, and our community. With over 100 employees, we pride ourselves on being a Partner of Choice, not only for our clients but also for our employees. We are committed to fostering a workplace where people choose to grow their careers, contribute meaningfully, and help shape the future of engineering excellence.
Whether you're just starting out or bringing years of experience, Spencer Engineering offers a unique opportunity to work on impactful projects in a collaborative and forward-thinking environment.
Your Role as an Intermediate Mechanical Designer  Reporting to the Manager of Mine Hoist Engineering, you will join the specialized Mine Hoist Division of BESTECH, operating as Spencer Engineering—a name recognized across North America for excellence in mine hoist engineering.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Designer looking to apply strong core design skills in a highly specialized engineering discipline. While previous mine hoist experience is not required, you will bring a solid mechanical design foundation, curiosity, and a desire to develop expertise in complex hoisting systems that play a critical role in mining operations.
Working alongside industry-leading Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Designers, and Technologists, you will contribute to projects involving the design, assessment, modernization, and maintenance of mine hoisting systems. Your work will combine office-based design with hands‑on field experience, including site visits throughout North America to inspect existing systems, collect field data, and support commissioning activities.
No two projects are the same.

This role offers the opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges, work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and build specialized expertise within one of North America’s most respected mine hoist engineering organizations. Once fully trained, you can expect to travel to client sites for approximately 25% of your time, with the remainder spent designing and collaborating from our Owen Sound Office.
