Patient Care Technician II – Memorial Healthcare
Job Summary:
Under direct supervision and/or direction of the department manager/director, charge nurse, or staff nurse/team leader, the Patient Care Technician II assists staff nurses in the treatment and care of patients in accordance with hospital procedures. The role strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service that supports an excellent patient and family experience, and demonstrates an understanding of patient‑ and family‑centered care.
Responsibilities
- Assist the nurse with patient admissions, discharges, transfers, pre‑ and post‑operative care, treatments, and related duties.
- Provide personal care (hygiene, ambulation, ADLs, etc.) as assigned.
- Perform routine treatments and specimen collections, document findings, and report any changes in patient condition or behavior.
- Document patient interventions in electronic medical records (EMR).
- Assist patients during meal times and with nourishment as directed.
- Make rounds frequently on assigned patients, respond to call lights/requests, and anticipate patient needs.
- Maintain a safe environment by cleaning equipment and rooms, reporting out‑of‑order equipment, preparing equipment for disinfection, and maintaining unit supplies.
- Assist physicians as requested (maintaining patient position, etc.).
- Attend in‑service education programs as assigned.
- Maintain current BLS certifications, competency assessments, and mandatory safety education.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and support hospital mission, vision, values, policies, procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality, corporate compliance, standards of behavior, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
- Provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned unit, assessing life‑span development and meeting age‑specific needs.
- Ambulatory – Perform UCGs, blood draws, and EKGs.
- Emergency – Perform splinting, splint care, EKGs, blood draws, Foley insertions, IV and saline lock starts.
- Endoscopy – Perform UCG, specialty scope cleaning.
- CCU – Perform blood draws and EKGs, IV and saline lock starts, Foley insertions.
- Perform other specific duties as assigned.
- CNA or EMT certification required.
- CMA acceptable for Surgical Services and Endoscopy departments.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of computer‑based competency classes required.
- Current BLS certification required.
- Must be able to perform simple math functions.
- Must be able to read and understand transcribed physician orders, vital signs, and chart information.
- Two years of patient care experience preferred.
- Travel independently within all Memorial Healthcare facilities.
- Operate modern computer, office, and telephone equipment.
- Access patient/resident in bed or stretcher for assessment, hygiene, and ADLs.
- Move patients/residents safely, independently or with assistive devices.
- Proficiency using modern office and computer equipment.
- Hand‑eye coordination and fine‑motor skills for administering treatments (vital signs, weights, hot packs, enemas, ace wraps, TED stockings, etc.).
- Adapt and maintain focus in fast‑paced, rapidly changing or stressful situations.
- Read and interpret a variety of documents, including policies, operating instructions, and regulations.
- Follow directions and document findings and interventions appropriately.
- Identify changes in patient/resident conditions and responses to interventions.
- See and read information printed on paper, computer, reports, bulletins, and updates.
- See and hear for work‑related purposes.
- Communicate effectively with patient/resident and family.
- Assess patient’s condition and auscultate blood pressures.
- See, smell, touch, and hear patient status.
- Communicate receptively and expressively in English, both written and verbal, to diverse populations.
- Maintain self‑control.
- Interact professionally and effectively with co‑workers, hospital staff, administration, patients, physicians, public, and all internal and external customers.
- Remain calm when adversity is encountered.
- Maintain open, honest, and tactful communication skills.
- Work as a team member in all activities.
- Maintain a positive, cooperative, and motivated attitude.
