About Us

At Where Sit Happens, we believe every dog deserves personalized training that helps them (and their humans) thrive. Based in Oxford, CT, we work with families and their pets to address challenges ranging from puppy basics to reactivity, public access skills, and therapy dog preparation. Our approach is rooted in positive reinforcement, compassion, and practicality. We meet each dog where they are and guide them forward with clarity and care.

Role Overview

We’re looking for an experienced Dog Trainer to join our growing team. This role is hands‑on, client‑facing, and highly rewarding. You’ll work with a wide range of dogs and people, helping build stronger bonds and real‑life skills that last well beyond the training session.

Responsibilities
  • Lead both private lessons and group training classes, creating engaging, effective learning experiences.
  • Address training needs such as: reactivity to dogs, people, and environmental triggers; puppy foundations and new dog owner education; family dynamics (dogs with kids/babies); separation anxiety and stranger‑danger behavior; therapy dog prep, CGC, and public access readiness.
  • Partner with clients to create and follow customized training plans, providing regular progress updates.
  • Keep detailed session notes and maintain accurate records in company systems.
  • Collaborate with the team to refine programs and share best practices.
What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience in dog training, including working with behavioral cases such as reactivity, separation anxiety, aggression or resource guarding.
  • Strong communication skills - you’ll spend a lot of time coaching the human side of the leash
  • Commitment to force‑free, positive reinforcement methods.
  • Dependable, professional, and organized with strong follow‑through.
  • Ability to adapt training to different dogs and family situations with patience and empathy.
  • A collaborative mindset – you value being part of a supportive team as much as you enjoy independent client work.
Preferred (Nice to Have)
  • Training certification through a reputable organization (KPA, Academy for Dog Trainers, etc.)
  • Comfort leading group classes in addition to one‑on‑one sessions.
  • Experience in sports or fields the complement our current team
  • Openness to mentorship and professional growth within the company.
Compensation & Schedule
  • Competitive pay based on experience and services provided.
  • Flexible scheduling with some evening and weekend availability.
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities.
