Position Title: Head Athletics/Activities Coach FLSA Status: Exempt Department: Athletics/Activities Reports to: Athletic Director Location: School Salary Scales: Coaches Scale Position Type: Full-Time Salary Range: 3%-36% of Salary
Description of Position: Oversees the administration of the assigned Athletic/Activities program composed of a number of students. Plans and manages competition strategies for individuals and the team at events.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Maintain knowledge of and adhere to all district policies, procedures, and expectations regarding athletic programs.
- Evaluate if the assigned Athletic/Activities program is responsive to student needs and meets district expectations.
- Assume primary responsibility for students during events, practices, or other athletic program related activities.
- Adhere to all financial policies of the district regarding the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
- Ensure the rules and regulations regarding safety, conduct, and eligibility of activities and students are explained and adhered to.
- Serve as a representative of the school district during events, maintaining professional conduct at all times.
- Complete and maintain appropriate certification and training hours as required, including all MHSAA requirements.
- Work with the Activities Directors to schedule facilities for practices and competition.
- Provide guidance and instruction to student athletes and assume responsibility for their safety during school events.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior during events.
- Provide proper supervision of students during events, practices, and other program related activities.
- Provide instruction and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement in the selected activity.
- Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development.
- Travel with students on the team bus both to and from games.
- Enforce discipline policies and emphasize sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles.
- Assess player’s skills and assign team positions.
- Maintain a safe environment and facilities for students at all times.
- Ensure academic, physical, and other forms of eligibility are met and maintain appropriate records.
- Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory and other required records.
- Complete eligibility paperwork in a specified time and manner.
- Monitor the academic performance of team members to ensure eligibility requirements are met and encourage student athletes to maintain high academic standards.
- Coordinate with Athletic Director to ensure the proper setup of facilities for all events.
- Maintain knowledge of classroom or gymnasium conditions and report any hazards or concerns to the Activities Director.
- Check and secure all offices, storage rooms, outside doors, and locker rooms after the last student leaves contests or practices.
- Ensure all facility lights are turned off at the end of all events.
- Monitor and maintain equipment and team uniforms.
- Provide leadership and guidance to Assistant Coach(es) and delegate tasks as needed.
- Coordinate, plan, and/or participate in special activities, including parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Activities Directors, Principal, or other appropriate administrators.
- Minimum Class “A” Mississippi Teaching License.
- Required endorsement(s) to be “Highly Qualified.”
- Head Coaching Experience (preferred).
- Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid Card, MS Class B Driver’s License with Air Brakes and Passenger Endorsements, and a coaching certificate through the National Federation of High Schools.
- MHSAA required certificates.
- All employees hired by the school district must pass a criminal background and child abuse registry check.
- Works well with others from diverse backgrounds.
- Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e‑mail, Internet software, and word processing software.
