Job DescriptionTeacher assistants are educational professionals who assist full‑time teachers, reinforcing their instruction and providing clerical assistance. They support full‑time teachers by handling clerical tasks and classroom activities, providing individual attention to students who need extra help, monitoring them when the teacher is absent, and helping students complete assignments. They also coordinate academic activities, supervise students in and out of the classroom, maintain a safe environment, and provide general support to teachers and students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Understand and comply with the rules and operations of the workplace.
- Respond appropriately when dealing with children and demonstrate proper presentation of educational materials.
- Follow the teacher’s instructions.
- Assist students assigned to the program with completing regular classroom assignments.
- Guide and encourage students to develop a positive attitude toward learning.
- Assist the teacher and reinforce instruction taught in the classroom.
- Review lessons individually with students, answering questions or grading assignments.
- Supervise students outside of the classroom on the playground, during bathroom breaks, at lunchtime, and on field trips.
- Enter grades or type up class summaries.
- Grade papers or work assignments.
- Assist with the integration of technology into the classroom, including setting up computers and projectors.
- Organize the classroom and keep supplies in order.
- Greet children when they arrive at school.
- Occasionally teach the class as whole under the supervision of the head teacher.
- Organize paperwork, photocopy, and prepare materials used in instruction, bulletins, and classroom displays.
- Ensure students board the correct bus.
- Maintain daily attendance and other records of students assigned to the program.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or classroom teacher.
- High school diploma/GED and meet the minimum standard of ACT Work Keys Silver Level certification scores OR
- Associate’s Degree or higher OR
- 48 college credit hours (60 hours for Pre‑K)
- General knowledge of a variety of academic subject areas.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods, exhibit manual dexterity to enter data, read at normal classroom levels, hear and understand speech at normal levels, and speak audibly. Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
- Specialized training or experience in education or counseling, or equivalent education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply methods for handling student misconduct.
- Excellent human relations and communication skills; ability to supervise students with varying abilities, assist with assignments, monitor behavior, and mediate conflicts within a disciplinary setting.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
