Water/Wastewater Service Technician I – Mississippi Department of Employment Security
Purpose of PositionOperate and maintain the entire City of Oxford Water Distribution System and Wastewater Collection System.
Major Duties and Responsibilities- Perform general maintenance and construction of water lines.
- Repair and construct water mains.
- Repair and replace fire hydrants.
- Install and record use of water meters.
- Replace asphalt after repairs are made.
- Inspect new construction to ensure compliance with City specifications and quality standards.
- Perform necessary tests on Lift Stations and force mains before acceptance by city.
- Perform general maintenance and construction of sewer lines.
- Clean out manholes.
- Lay new sewer pipe, construct new service lines, and set new manholes.
- Assist other Water/Wastewater Technicians and other agencies as needed.
- Perform other duties as directed.
- Knowledge of water mechanics and laying pipes, location of water mains and pipes, construction layout, plumbing, testing procedures for water lines, and pressure/flow tests.
- Knowledge of sewer line construction, manhole construction, testing procedures, general sewer fluid mechanics, identification of work locations, and OSHA standards and regulations.
- General mathematical skills and knowledge of federal and state statutes pertaining to department work.
- Skills:
Operating a backhoe and bulldozer, reading construction blueprints and grade stakes, installing sewer lines, running air tests, supervising Water Division personnel, communicating with residents and officials, evaluating construction quality, working as a team, making decisions under time restraints, maintaining confidentiality, handling multiple tasks, maintaining professional composure, following departmental and city procedures.
- Valid Class B driver’s license and Backflow Prevention certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in mechanical construction preferred.
- At least three years of experience in Water Distribution or a related field.
- Hand tools (shovels, saws, etc.).
- Departmental equipment (backhoe, hydraulic sewer cleaner, air hammer, dump truck).
- Heavy equipment (dozer, etc.).
Physical work includes lifting, bending, climbing, and withstanding extreme temperatures. The role involves outdoor work in all weather conditions, exposure to chemicals such as chlorine, and may require occasional overtime and night work. The position is on-call.
Selection GuidelinesFormal application, rating of education and experience, oral interview, background investigation, and job‑related tests may be required.
