Overview

The Assistant Director for Leadership Engagement is a member of the Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service and the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life team. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director for the Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service and works with colleagues and stakeholders in the enhancement of leadership development and service engagement at Miami University.

The Assistant Director will supervise undergraduate student employees and may supervise at least one Graduate Assistant and provide supplementary support to additional Graduate Student staff. The Assistant Director works with the entire team and other colleagues to develop and implement opportunities for students to understand their leadership skills and how they can use them to positively impact the community. Additional opportunities include professional development through participation in conferences and workshops, including certification as a Clifton Strengths™ Coach.

The Assistant Director works collaboratively with students, campus partners, community leaders, and departments to provide students with the opportunity to engage with communities of interest and develop a sense of belonging. The Assistant Director represents the offices through multiple campus committees that support the leadership, service, and civic engagement mission of the Institute. The Assistant Director also fosters close working relationships with campus partners, community partners, and community‑based organizations.

Responsibilities
  • Exercise collaborative leadership within the offices to facilitate the coordination of the Ambassador program (peer leaders/facilitators) and other signature events, services, and programs.
  • Work collaboratively with other areas of the offices to develop and implement leadership workshops and retreats designed to increase the leadership capacity of students, student organization leaders, and student organization advisors.
  • Deliver workshops and programs designed to increase participation in Miami’s Gallup Clifton Strengths™ efforts.
  • Serve as the Stakeholder representative for the Scholar Leader Living Learning Community. Work collaboratively with the Office of Residence Life designee to facilitate community programming and retreat opportunities for students selected to participate in the community.
  • Teach one section of EDL 290, Nature of Group Leadership or similar course on a rotating basis.
  • Facilitate the Leadership and Service Certificate Program.
  • Execute U‑Lead pre‑semester leadership development program for first‑year students.
  • Potentially supervise 1 Graduate Assistant, a Graduate Practicum student, and up to 10 undergraduate student employees (Ambassadors).
  • Assist the Associate Director and other team members with the implementation of large‑scale service initiatives/days of service and community engagement activities designed to facilitate positive relationships between the City of Oxford residents, Butler County community members and Miami University students.
  • Deliver workshops and programs designed to increase student awareness of and participation in community service and volunteerism.
  • Assist with Office Wide Social Media and website initiatives and updates.
  • Actively participate in Student Life and University Committees. Represent the offices on several campus committees that are aligned with the service and community engagement missions of the Institute.
  • Manage event/program processes for large scale events and work collaboratively with campus partners and off‑campus partners and vendors to ensure the success of events.
  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends to facilitate programs and activities designed to engage and serve students.
