Position in Energy Systems Department, Regular full‑time. Salary $105k–$125k. Work 40 hrs/week. On campus Oxford, OH.
Job OverviewThis role directly responsible for operating, maintaining, and planning the medium voltage (12.47 kV and 4.16 kV) electrical distribution systems on the Oxford campus. The manager monitors budgets and operations to provide the university community with safe, reliable, and cost‑effective utility services. Serves as the university’s primary technical authority for the medium voltage electrical grid, ensuring resilient and efficient power delivery that supports the academic and research mission.
EssentialDuties
- System Operations & Maintenance: safe and reliable operation and maintenance of the medium voltage distribution system; develop and document preventive and corrective maintenance activities; purchase and maintain adequate inventory.
- Supervision & Leadership: direct supervision and technical leadership to university high voltage service technician and contractors; oversee unit operations, set priorities, review completed jobs, and manage the unit budget.
- Emergency Response & System Integrity: expert technical support for emergencies 24/7; create, review, and execute complex switching orders; develop written SOPs for switching of energy sources.
- Project Management & Design Review: review design of projects related to the electrical system for new construction and renovation projects; create and maintain written standards for procurement and installation of electrical equipment per applicable codes and the preferences of Miami University.
- Strategic Planning & Financial Management: contribute to departmental operational and financial efficiency by creating and executing electrical energy procurement and generator dispatch strategies.
- Safety & Compliance: monitor use of personal protective equipment and procedures; coordinate and document safety training for key university employees.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and minimum of five (5) years of full‑time experience managing, installing, maintaining, and/or operating a complex medium voltage system.
- Related associate’s degree and minimum of eight (8) years of full‑time experience managing, installing, maintaining, and/or operating a complex medium voltage system.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of full‑time, verifiable experience managing, installing, maintaining, and/or operating a complex medium voltage system.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and minimum of five (5) years of full‑time experience managing, installing, maintaining, and/or operating a complex medium voltage system.
- Direct experience managing a complex medium voltage system in a university, hospital, or similar large‑campus environment.
- Experience managing a unionized technical staff.
- Professional certification such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Energy Management Professional (EMP), or Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP).
- Deep working knowledge of medium voltage electrical distribution systems, including substations, switch gear, transformers, and protective relaying.
- Proven ability to read and interpret complex one‑line diagrams, electrical schematics, and construction blueprints.
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills; ability to lead a technical team and respond quickly during time‑sensitive situations.
- Strong budgeting and administrative abilities.
- Physical effort: walking, standing, lifting 25–50 lb; moderate physical situations possible.
Physical effort requires considerable walking and standing, with some lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Periodically, assignments may entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations.
Computer SkillsProficient in business application software; experienced with computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
