About Us

Oxfordshire County Council is seeking a Traveller Site Officer to join our small but brilliant, Gypsy and Traveller Service. We aim to deliver an outstanding service that is community focused, trusted, and inclusive, as well as promoting fairness and equality across all communities. The team consists of a Service Manager, Traveller Site Officer, and Traveller Support Officer.

We manage 6 Gypsy and Traveller Council Sites, totalling 89 pitches, and are responsible for tackling unauthorised encampments across the county. We are in partnership with Oxfordshire District Councils, including Towns and Parishes, Thames Valley Police and the Oxfordshire Health Trust.

This is a unique, challenging, and versatile role meaning that day to day tasks are quite often varied. You may find yourself dealing with challenging and sometimes emotional situations so it’s important you’re able to work calmly under pressure and balance completing demands effectively.

About the Role

The postholder will play a key role in ensuring the ongoing operation, maintenance and improvement of the sites, while also acting as a primary point of contact for Gypsy and Traveller related matters within Oxfordshire.

The role involves regular interaction with Councillors and members of the public.

A flexible, multi-skilled approach is essential, as the postholder will be expected to cover the duties of other team members during the periods of leave.

Understanding of legislations; the Mobile Homes Act 1983 and the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 is required.

This post holder is responsible for ensuring that all relevant County policies and procedures are adhered to, and concerns are raised in accordance with these policies.

This is a varied and challenging role. You may find yourself dealing with challenging and sometimes emotional situations so it’s important you’re able to work calmly under pressure and balance competing demands effectively. It includes participation in an on-call rota and an expectation to deal with work related matters outside of normal office hours.

About you

Do you have:

  • Great communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Great negotiation skills
  • Good level of numeracy
  • Cultural knowledge of Gypsy and Traveller community
  • Minimum 2 years of experience of working with a marginalised Ethnic minority group
  • A full UK driving licence
