Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Horton Hospital.
Main dutiesAll responsibilities revolve around gaining further experience in hip and knee surgery under the direct supervision of consultants within the Hip and Knee Team. The candidate will conduct clinics, operating lists, ward rounds and assist with clinical management during consultants’ absence. The post involves an orthopaedic registrar on‑call rota, as follows:
- Resident on‑call 0800‑2030 (1:20)
- Non‑resident on‑call 2000‑0800 (1:20)
- Resident on‑call 2000‑0830 (1:20)
Fellowships will broadly encompass one of three areas during each six‑month period: revision arthroplasty, soft tissue knee surgery, orthopaedic oncology or hip arthroscopy. Applicants should indicate two areas they would like to cover during their fellowship.
Qualifications- Full current GMC registration with a license to practice.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualifications.
- FRCS (T&O) or equivalent.
- Post‑CCT or equivalent by time of appointment.
- Satisfactory career progression.
- Post‑graduate qualification such as BSc, MSc, MEd or other.
- Expected to achieve 18 months of hip and knee surgery during specialist training.
- Understanding of audit, clinical risk management and evidence‑based practice.
- Knowledge of research methodology, ethics and potential contribution to research.
- Leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills appropriate for a large teaching hospital.
- Ability to organise, manage time and prioritise clinical needs within limitations of experience.
- Ability to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
- Sound note‑keeping skills.
- Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date.
- Good personal and interpersonal skills.
- Good spoken and written English with highly developed communication skills.
- Experience teaching undergraduates and trainees.
- Experience and participation in clinical governance and audit.
- Previous research experience with publications.
- Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g., degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions.
- Evidence of completion of clinical improvement projects.
