The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology provides maternity and gynaecology service to the Oxford region and is responsible for over 7000 deliveries per year. It is also a tertiary referral centre for district general hospitals in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. This is an approved training centre for subspecialties in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Gynaecological Oncology, Uro-gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine.

It has close links to the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health, University of Oxford.

The Delivery Suite is covered at all times by three tiers of specialist trainees: ST1-2 (or GP trainee or Foundation doctor), ST3-5 and ST6-7. During office hours the senior tier (ST6-7) is covered by a Consultant Obstetrician. Neonatologists, obstetric anaesthetists, junior and middle grade obstetricians are available at all times. All obstetric consultants maintain an active Delivery Suite role.

There is a large Tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Unit works closely with the High Risk Pregnancy Service.

This post will provide ample exposure to all aspects of obstetrics & gynaecology to provide a solid foundation in the specialty. There are numerous training opportunities (including the chance to perform surgical procedures under direct supervision). There are also numerous educational meetings held on a weekly basis within the department and opportunities to be involved in audit and research.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with some shifts at the Churchill Cancer Centre.

This post involves general duties in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, including:

  • Urgent gynaecology, including early pregnancy clinic
  • Gynaecology theatres (including elective and urgent gynaecology lists)
  • Obstetric ward rounds (antenatal and postnatal) and Maternity Assessment Unit cover
  • General antenatal and gynaecology clinics
  • Out-of-hours on-call duties

During on-call duties, the post holder resides at the John Radcliffe Hospital or Churchill Hospital. On-call duties are part of a 17-cell rolling rota. Every 17-week cycle includes: five weekend daytime on-call; one weekend night on-call; one set of four week nights and some twilight shifts. The rota is EWTD compliant, and there are numerous rest (zero hours) days in the rota.

Normal daytime duty hours are ; twilight duty hours are 1730–2030; weekend daytime on-call is 0800–2030; night on-call is 2000–0830.
