Medical Ophthalmology Fellow

The OPHTHALMOLOGY fellowship is available from August 2026 at the John Radcliffe Hospital. This fellowship is for candidates interested in one or more of the following subspecialties:
Uveitis (ocular inflammation) and medical retina. If you are interested in neuro-ophthalmology as an additional subspecialty interest, this will be accommodated.

The appointment is on a whole-time basis, but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their training or have completed a significant part of their training but seek experience in Uveitis (ocular inflammation) and medical retina prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not a post that is approved for training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Candidates are welcome to visit the department and are invited to contact Mr Jonathan Norris, Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology and Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, The John Radcliffe.

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant supervisors. Suitably qualified job‑share candidates will be considered. We can assist with obtaining GMC registration for suitably qualified candidates as long as they have passed the English Language test requirements.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC with Licence to practice
  • General training in ophthalmology to specialist level or equivalent with MEDICAL OPHTHALMOLOGY experience
  • CCT, CESR or equivalent
  • FRCOphth/Part III/MRCOphth
Experience
  • Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical and operative care in ophthalmology
  • Demonstrate special expertise in the areas of sub-specialty of MEDICAL OPHTHALMOLOGY
  • Higher specialist training in ophthalmology or equivalent
Skills
  • Ability to self motivate and be involved in teaching and training
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to organise and manage clinical workload
  • To undertake effectively the role of clinical fellow in a large teaching hospital.
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
  • Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels skills should be highly developed.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
  • Experience of routine clinical audit
  • Driving Licence
  • Knowledge of the organization
  • NHS and the Government's agenda for its modernisation
  • Interest in taking part in research projects
  • Management training and experience
