Trust Specialist Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery

A full‑time post as Specialist Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery for 1 year, extendable to a maximum of 2 years is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The Cardiothoracic unit provides a service covering all aspects of adult Cardiothoracic Surgery (on‑ and off‑pump CABG, aortic and mitral valve surgery, aortic aneurysm surgery, extended lung resection, VATS, endobronchial stents and thymectomies), excluding transplantation. The department requires participation in clinical research, audit and teaching. This post is not approved for training and does not carry an NTN and would be most suitable for someone early in their training and wishing to gain further experience in Cardiac and/or Thoracic Surgery.

Responsibilities

The post-holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital, with occasional contribution to clinics and inpatient care at the Churchill hospital. The post-holder will participate in the service's inpatient and outpatient activities, experience in operating theatre, regular MDTs and outpatient clinics and postoperative rounds. The post-holder will be expected to participate in the in‑service training and teaching; training agreements will be made at the beginning of the appointment.

The post-holder will also participate in the full‑shift cardiothoracic registrar on‑call rota (currently 1:8 resident on‑call), dealing with all cardiothoracic referrals and covering the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit on a full shift rota.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • GMC Full Licence to Practice
  • Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent
  • Six months training at registrar level in cardiothoracic surgery
Experience
  • Evidence of achievement of ST2 competencies relevant to cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Experience sufficient to competently assist in cardiothoracic operations.
  • Experience sufficient to manage emergency cardiothoracic referrals.
  • Experience of managing/ performing emergency sternal reopening.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical governance and interest in clinical research with publications.
Skills
  • Experience in chest drains, sternotomy, thoracotomy, conduit harvest and surgical assisting.
  • Leadership, organisational, and professional skills to undertake this role effectively.
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience of collaborating with multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Proficient spoken and written English for referrals over the telephone and in person.
  • Understanding of Clinical Audit.
  • Evidence of teaching.
  • Knowledge of the NHS and how care is delivered within it.
  • Computing skills: ability to use electronic patient records.
  • Validated logbook demonstrating general surgical, cardiac or thoracic experience.
