Role Overview
The post holder will work across various hospitals in the Trust, predominantly on the Breast Unit as a Fellow. The role will involve regular access to operating lists with exposure to the complete range of breast procedures and results clinics, providing training in planning and counselling patients for their appropriate oncological and reconstructive procedures. The post holder will support diagnostic and follow‑up clinics and contribute to the rota for emergency general surgery patients, covering all stages of the emergency surgery pathway, including initial triage assessment, surgery and post‑operative care (currently 1 in 15).
The position is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital under the supervision of 8 consultants (4 part‑time and one Associate Specialist). The full 12‑month Registrar post in Breast Surgery & Emergency General Surgery will commence from July 2026.
- Attend operating lists and provide surgical support across the Trust’s hospitals.
- Coordinate and deliver breast cancer diagnostic, planning, and results clinics.
- Collaborate closely with the plastic surgery team to deliver oncoplastic breast surgery and free‑flap reconstruction services.
- Provide 24‑hour registrar cover in a 12‑hour shift rota for triage, wards and theatres.
- Support emergency general surgery pathways, including triage assessment, surgery and post‑operative care.
- Engage in clinical audit and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
- Full GMC licence to practise.
- Completion of 2 years of core surgical training.
- MB BS or equivalent; higher degree in surgery (MRCS) preferred.
- Demonstrated team‑leadership and organisational skills; excellent written and verbal communication.
- Experience teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
- Experience of routine clinical audit.
- UK professional registration required.
- Higher degree (research).
- Previous breast surgery experience at registrar level.
- Full driving licence.
The Breast Unit in Oxford handles approximately 8,000 referrals per year, with over 600 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients treated at the Cancer Centre at the Churchill Hospital and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury.
