Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Haematologist (1.0 WTE) at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to support the red cell and related transfusion services and general haematology at the Horton hospital.
The Department of Clinical Haematology in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT) provides a tertiary regional service to a population of 1.4 million. It includes consultants broadly covering all major specialties in haematology with variable levels of site specialisation.
The post holder will join the existing team of haematology consultants involved in red cell and transfusion services and a second consultant at the Horton hospital.
Main duties of the jobClinical Haematology The Haematology department provides comprehensive treatment of all haematological malignancies (including allogeneic bone marrow transplantation) and non-malignant haematological conditions, including coagulation disorders and is closely associated with the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), Blood Transfusion Centre in Oxford. The Clinical service is located at the Churchill Hospital, with 25 inpatient beds, comprehensive outpatient and day care facilities, and dedicated research beds.
Support is provided by the laboratory Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) and regular multidisciplinary team meetings.
Laboratory Haematology The laboratory provides a large and varied range of tertiary specialist testing through close integration with the Oxford Genetics Laboratories, it supports the largest Haemostasis Centre in the UK, an established regional Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS). The haemoglobinopathy screening service runs a national antenatal screening programme and telephone advice service for hospitals dealing with haemoglobinopathy care.
The workload is wide and varied as would be expected in a large tertiary referral centre. It runs to approximately 1.4 million tests per annum, which includes 850,000 FBC but also a wide variety of specialist haemophilia or molecular tests.
