Associate Professorship Politics of Latin America

Overview

The University of Oxford is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in the Politics of Latin America, to be held jointly by DPIR and OSGA, with a Governing Body Fellowship at St Antony's College. The post is full-time and permanent on successful completion of a review within the first five years, and will commence at the start of the 2026/27 academic year or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will carry out internationally excellent research, with a particular focus on Latin American Politics, and contribute actively to the vibrant academic communities in DPIR, OSGA, and the Latin American Centre. You will take on undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision, help shape curricula, attract and mentor graduate students, and play a leading role in Latin American Studies and comparative politics.

The role also carries responsibility for academic administration, admissions, and examining. As a Governing Body Fellow of St Antony's College, you will participate in the College's governance and research culture, advise graduate students, and contribute to its interdisciplinary community.

• Conduct world-leading research on Latin American politics, disseminated through high-impact publications and international collaboration.
• Secure external research funding and lead projects of significance to the field.
• Teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, including MSc and MPhil candidates in Latin American Studies, MPhil in Comparative Government, in addition to the proposed new MSc in Global Challenges.
• Lead, if appropriate, the Brazilian Studies Programme and contribute to the running and development of the Latin American Centre.
• Undertake departmental, faculty, and college administration, including admissions and examining.
• Engage with policymakers, practitioners, and wider publics to enhance the impact of your research.

• A doctorate in Political Science or a closely related field, awarded before 1 October 2025.
• An outstanding record of internationally excellent research, with expertise in Latin American Politics and specialism in comparative politics.
• A clear and ambitious research agenda with strong potential to attract funding.
• Excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching and supervision of students at all levels.
• Strong interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively.
• A demonstrated commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and administration.

• Fieldwork experience.
• Research and/or teaching experience on Brazilian politics.
• Willingness to teach the International Relations of Latin America course and to engage in outreach and public engagement.

The post-holder will be based at the Latin American Centre, St Antony's College, and will divide duties equally between DPIR and OSGA. Grade & Salary:
Grade 10a (36S) Salary from £58,265 to £77,645 per annum including Oxford University Weighting, plus additional benefits and allowances. An additional allowance of £3,199 per annum would be payable upon award of Full Professor title. St Antony's College offers a housing allowance of £2,912 per annum; increasing in line with University cost of living awards.
