Overview of the role

We are seeking a Departmental Lecturer in Physiology and Pharmacology (Practical Class Teaching) to coordinate and deliver practical class teaching for Biomedical Sciences and pre‑clinical Medicine students.

The successful candidate will provide academic leadership for physiology and pharmacology practical teaching, working closely with Course Directors, teaching technicians and colleagues across the Medical Sciences Division to ensure a high‑quality, innovative and engaging student experience. The role combines leadership of laboratory‑based teaching activities with curriculum development, educational innovation and operational oversight of practical class delivery.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong background in physiology and pharmacology who is passionate about undergraduate education and wishes to develop a career in medical and biomedical sciences education.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the delivery of physiology and pharmacology practical teaching for Biomedical Sciences and pre‑clinical Medicine students.
  • Organise and deliver laboratory‑based practical classes, ensuring a high‑quality student learning experience.
  • Line manage and support the development of the practical teaching technician team.
  • Develop and implement innovative approaches, including digital technologies, to enhance practical class teaching and student engagement.

Selection criteria
  • PhD/DPhil (or equivalent) with substantial physiology and pharmacology content.
  • Significant experience of teaching physiology and/or pharmacology at undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for and commitment to high‑quality undergraduate education.
  • Ability to develop and deliver innovative teaching approaches that enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in education and the workplace.
