College Lecturer, French Teacher
St Catherine’s College proposes to appoint a 5‑hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Early Modern French with effect from October 2026.
The appointment is for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal (subject to successful probation and approval by the Governing Body).
Responsibilities- Teach 5 weighted hours averaged over three terms (24 weeks) for the duration of the appointment.
- Play a full role in the running of French in the College, including arranging tuition, participating in admissions, setting and marking examinations, helping to organise the Year Abroad, and taking a role in pastoral care of undergraduates.
- Teach papers in French literature and language to undergraduates reading for degrees involving French, oversee their academic programmes, and monitor their progress.
- Core teaching will include translation into English for all year groups, and one or two hours a week devoted to teaching in Early Modern areas of the first‑year Prelims and Final Honours School literature course (second and fourth year).
There may be the possibility of an additional separate teaching arrangement with the Faculty for which the appointee would be paid at the relevant lecture rate (£143.46 per hour inc. holiday pay at 25–26 rates).

Compensation and BenefitsThe annual stipend for the Stipendiary Lecturer appointment is currently £14,088. The Lecturer will be a member of the Senior Common Room and will be entitled, free of charge, to five meals per week (three of which may be lunch) during Term and the Admissions Period, and one lunch and one dinner per week outside Term.
