Position

The Stephen A Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Oxford OX2 6AH
Faculty of History, University of Oxford Grade 7 | Part-time (0.5 FTE) | Fixed-term for 24 months.

The Faculty of History is seeking to appoint an outstanding scholar to a two-year Departmental Lectureship in Medieval British History from 1 October 2026. This part‑time post provides teaching and examining cover during the secondment of the current Associate Professor of Medieval History and offers an excellent opportunity to join one of the world’s leading history faculties.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver lectures, tutorials and classes for undergraduate papers in the History of the British Isles (1000‑1330 and 1330‑1550).
  • Convening and teaching the Optional Subject Sexuality, Climate and Politics: the World of Edward II, 1307‑1327.
  • Contribute to other medieval history teaching according to your expertise.
  • Supervise undergraduate dissertations and postgraduate taught students.
  • Participate in examining and admissions.
  • Develop teaching materials and support students’ academic progress.
  • Contribute to the Faculty’s vibrant research culture through seminars, workshops and collaborative activities.
  • Receive mentoring from a senior academic and benefit from dedicated support for research and career development.
Qualifications
  • Have, or be close to completing, a doctorate in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrate expertise in medieval British history, particularly the history of the British Isles between c.1000 and 1550.
  • Have experience of, or clear potential for, delivering high‑quality undergraduate teaching.
  • Have the ability to supervise postgraduate taught students and contribute to curriculum development.
  • Have a developing publication profile appropriate to your career stage and a commitment to pursuing high‑quality research.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organisational abilities, and a collaborative approach to academic life.
  • Have good digital literacy; experience of innovative teaching methods and a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion would be advantageous.
