Senior Highways Engineer

Hours:

Full Time – 37 hours per week
Rate: £228.84 PAYE per day
We are seeking an experienced Senior Highways Engineer to lead the delivery of highway maintenance and improvement schemes across Oxfordshire. The role involves identifying, designing, and managing schemes relating to carriageways, footways, drainage systems, safety barriers, and other highway assets.
Key responsibilities include overseeing scheme delivery, managing budgets, procurement and risk, preparing specifications and contract documents, undertaking site investigations, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. You will provide technical expertise, support strategic planning, produce reports for senior leaders and Members, and act as an escalation point for complex issues.
The successful candidate will also manage and develop staff, promote continuous improvement, build strong stakeholder relationships, and deputise for the Team Leader when required.
Requirements

Educated to degree level with a relevant professional qualification such as Incorporated Engineer accreditation or equivalent, OR significant demonstrable industry experience

Proven experience in highways engineering and scheme delivery

Strong knowledge of highway maintenance and asset management

Experience managing budgets, contracts, procurement, and risk

Ability to use sound judgement in complex and sensitive situations

Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills with the ability to produce clear and concise reports

Understanding and experience using data, insight, and performance measures to inform decision-making and improve service outcomes

Strong stakeholder management and team leadership skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, and Excel

Knowledge of relevant highways legislation and standards
