Management
We are looking for an Electronics Engineering Manager to lead the electronics function within our Systems team will lead a team of three electronics engineers and grow it as our programmes scale. The team designs, builds and tests the electronics subsystems behind our mission to build the most performant quantum computers.
This is a player-coach role, with roughly 60% of your time spent leading the team and 40% on hands‑on design work. You will set the technical direction for our electronics deliverables and build a team that can deliver them reliably, from experimental prototypes to rack‑ready production systems.
ResponsibilitiesYou will own the electronics roadmap for current and next‑generation quantum systems. That covers schematic capture and PCB layout through to board and system‑level test, and the drive architecture for QPU designs.
You will balance hands‑on technical leadership with people management, planning and coordination across teams. As the main electronics contact for the physics, firmware, mechanical and systems teams, you will turn complex physical requirements into clear, achievable engineering plans, and you will keep improving the tooling, workflow and capability of the team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Team leadership:
Lead and develop a team of three electronics engineers and play a key role in growing it through hiring. Set clear goals, run regular 1:1s and performance reviews, and build a culture of technical excellence and accountability. - Technical direction:
Own the architecture of the electronics subsystems, including mixed‑signal design, high‑speed digital and signal integrity. Approve key design decisions and lead design reviews. - Delivery and planning:
Plan, prioritise and track electronics work streams against programme milestones, managing resourcing, schedules, risks and dependencies, and report progress to stakeholders. - Quality and process:
Set and improve design standards, review processes, verification and test strategy (simulation, bench test, system integration) and documentation practices. - Productisation:
Lead the move from experimental prototypes to robust, manufacturable, rack‑ready production systems, working with suppliers and contract manufacturers as needed.
To succeed, you will need around ten years of experience in electronics design, with a strong background in high‑speed and mixed‑signal electronics, proven experience leading engineers and a track record of taking hardware from concept through prototype to production on schedule. You should be able to give credible technical guidance while growing the team around you, and bring a high level of attention to detail to your own work and to the designs you review.
You will be comfortable in a fast‑moving, highly technical environment and know when to use waterfall or agile delivery in a hardware setting. Experience with Jira and Smartsheet, exposure to cryogenic environments, RF/microwave engineering (up to 500 MHz) or Python‑based test automation, and familiarity with the Sinara/ARTIQ ecosystem in a quantum or physics research setting would all be an advantage.
You’d be a great fit with:
- Engineering leadership experience: A track record of managing or technically leading electronics engineers, including hiring, mentoring and performance management.
- Strong hardware design background:
Hands‑on experience with mixed‑signal and high‑speed digital design, SPICE modelling and lab verification (oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers). - Altium expertise:
Experience with complex schematics, rigid‑flex designs and advanced signal‑integrity constraints, and the ability to review and guide others' designs. - FPGA and high‑performance hardware:
Familiarity with Xilinx/Intel tool chains (Vivado/Quartus) and carriers such as the Bitt Ware XUP series or Sinara/ARTIQ hardware. - High‑speed interfaces:
Knowledge of SFP+/QSFP‑DD interfaces, 10/100G Ethernet and high‑speed differential pair routing.
