Job Description & How to Apply Below

Are you a technically curious engineer who enjoys getting to the bottom of tricky hardware and software problems?

Would you like a role where you can combine technical support, software testing, QA and release engineering rather than being confined to just one area?

And does working with technologies such as Linux, Python, Docker, ROS and edge computing sound like the kind of challenge you’re looking for?

Our client is a growing Oxford-based technology business developing sophisticated software and hardware solutions. They’re looking for a Technical Support & Test Engineer to become an important link between customers and the engineering team.

This is a varied, hands‑on position where you’ll troubleshoot real-world technical issues, test new functionality and help ensure software releases reach users reliably. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to broaden your technical knowledge while working alongside an experienced engineering team.

Why This Role is Great

This isn't simply a support desk position. You'll get exposure to the complete journey from identifying a technical problem through to testing the solution and helping deliver it successfully.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Become a trusted technical problem-solver
, investigating customer issues across interconnected software and hardware systems.
  • Take ownership of testing and quality
, developing and carrying out test plans, regression testing and end-to-end validation.
  • Master complex troubleshooting
, using logs, command‑line tools and structured investigation to identify root causes.
  • Get hands‑on with modern engineering technology
, including Linux/Ubuntu, Python, Bash, Docker, ROS and edge‑based computing environments.
  • Own elements of the release process
, helping coordinate, validate and document software releases.
  • Improve deployment reliability
, supporting software updates to remotely deployed devices.
  • Turn customer feedback into engineering improvements
, translating real‑world issues into clear, actionable information for developers.
  • Build useful technical documentation that makes troubleshooting and product use easier for customers and colleagues.
  • Grow your automation skills
, using scripting to make testing, analysis and release processes faster and more dependable.

Because the business is growing, you'll also have the opportunity to influence how testing, support and release processes develop rather than simply inheriting rigid procedures.

About You

Our client is keeping the wishlist deliberately broad. You don't need to tick every box to be worth a conversation.

You may already have experience as a Technical Support Engineer, Test Engineer, QA Engineer, Systems Engineer, Release Engineer or in another hands‑on technical role involving complex software or connected devices.

It would be particularly useful if you enjoy working with:

  • Linux/Ubuntu
, including confidently navigating and troubleshooting through the command line.
  • Python and Bash for scripting, automation, testing or log analysis.
  • Docker and containerised applications.
  • Git and CI/CD workflows
, such as Git Hub Actions, Git Lab CI or similar.
  • Testing methodologies including regression, integration and end‑to‑end testing
    .
  • Diagnosing problems that cross the boundary between hardware and software
    .
  • Customers or end users, particularly when gathering information and explaining technical concepts clearly.

Experience with
ROS or ROS 2 would be valuable, particularly if you've previously debugged nodes, topics, services or recorded data.

Knowledge of areas such as edge computing hardware, cloud platforms, web applications, automated device deployment, Linux package management or advanced positioning/mapping technologies would also be welcome, but these are areas you could continue developing in the role.

Most importantly, you'll enjoy solving technical problems, communicating with people and working in an environment where priorities can evolve as new products and processes develop.

What’s On Offer?

Alongside a salary of £40,000–£50,000
, the successful Technical Support & Test Engineer can expect:

  • Employee share options
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Pension salary exchange scheme
  • Training and exposure to…
