Estates Mechanical Operative

Job Overview

Band 3 plus RRP, Overtime & On-call allowance available. 37.5 hours per week.

Location:

John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford.

Salary: £25,760 – £27,476 per annum (pro rata). Closing: 04/08/2026 23:59.

• Work in accordance with HTM’s, HBN’s, Model Specifications, statutory regulations, codes of practice, British Standards and Trust policies and procedures.
• Actively participate in the Trust’s labour control scheme, completing all required paperwork, job dockets and timesheets.
• Carry out planned preventative maintenance, including heating and ventilation systems and medical gas PPM's.
• Prioritise changing workloads and act proactively to address work requests in conjunction with the Estates Operations Manager/Mechanical Team Leader.
• Understand and apply maintenance policies.
• Assist other trades as required.
• Work in unpleasant or hazardous environments, such as areas with steam leaks, bodily fluids and raw sewage.
• Work with emotional sensitivity in settings such as mortuaries, children’s wards, general wards and ITU.
• Carry out any other duties appropriate to the grade.
• Process own timesheets and job dockets independently.
• Carry a Trust communication device (two‑way radio, mobile phone) at all times to facilitate immediate response to emergencies.

This role is subject to a 6‑month probationary period.

• NC/HNC/HND in Mechanical/Building Services Engineering or equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Full Driving Licence.
• Training in Health & Safety, e.g. First Aid, NEBOSH, IOSH, etc.
• Experience across several HTMs acting as either a CP or AP.
• Knowledge of ventilation systems or medical gases.

• Knowledge of maintenance methodologies.
• Experience of working within and developing a safe system of work.
• Experience in a similar role.
• Good knowledge of energy‑efficient working practices within engineering.
• Knowledge of HTMs, HBNs and Estates‑specific legislation.
• Experience in a health‑care engineering environment or willingness to acquire it.

• Work independently and exercise a high degree of professional judgement.
• Work under pressure.
• Make sound judgements regarding operational safety when working alone or under pressure.
• Proactive, self‑motivated.
• Carry out mechanical and/or electrical repair works to building services installations.
• Carry out non‑licenced asbestos work.
• Highly organised.

• Use small tools and carry out fine adjustments to building services regularly.
• Carry out routine and emergency maintenance on engineering and building systems.
• Work within clinical areas in close vicinity to patients.
