About the Role
Introduction – the ‘why’
This role offers the opportunity to provide first‑level managerial support to a team responsible for producing academic journals to agreed quality, timelines, and budget. You will be contributing to OUP’s mission by ensuring high‑quality delivery of academic content while supporting a constantly evolving publishing environment. The position allows you to collaborate with journal editorial teams, offshore suppliers, and internal publishing functions—making it an impactful role that directly strengthens OUP’s publishing excellence.
As part of a global organisation, your work will influence journal performance, client satisfaction, supplier coordination, and continuous improvement within content operations. This makes the role professionally rewarding and an opportunity to contribute to both current and future publishing success.
Opportunity – the ‘what’In this role, you will:
- Manage a team of Production staff to ensure timely, on‑budget, high‑quality journal publishing, while monitoring performance and costs.
- Recruit and develop staff to build capability and support changing business needs.
- Contribute to managing supplier performance, coordinating workflow solutions, and adapting approaches as requirements evolve.
- Proactively manage client relationships, ensuring expectations are understood and issues are resolved promptly.
Impact of the role: Your contribution will ensure that team members clearly understand their responsibilities, stakeholder feedback is positive and actioned, and that journals consistently meet performance goals related to publication speed, issue delivery, content quality, and author satisfaction.
About You- Demonstrated management potential (line management experience preferred)
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Experience managing production of a significant number of products within a publishing environment
- Experience managing sensitive client relationships.
- Experience managing third‑party and freelance vendors (preferred)
Resources available to this role:
- 5–9 staff
- Approximately 420 journals
- Approximately £13m in production spend
