Senior Anaesthetic & Recovery Nurse/ODP

Job Responsibilities
  • Manage, direct and evaluate nursing care for a defined caseload of patients.
  • Communicate effective information to patients, relatives, carers and all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate high standards of perioperative care reflecting professional practice beliefs and OUH values.
  • Develop and maintain specialist knowledge of perioperative practice relevant to the clinical area.
  • Be responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care from admission to discharge, demonstrating collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to Trust policy; teach patients and relatives correct administration where appropriate.
  • Accurately document and report to perioperative and multidisciplinary team information regarding care given, communicating changes as they occur.
  • Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support; support patients, families and staff as required.
  • Identify and discuss patient needs with team, staff, patients, carers and multidisciplinary team; plan own workload and that of others as required.
  • Use a problem solving approach to execute planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care plans based on a person-centred model.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively, overcoming barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing events.
  • Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times.
  • Ensure clinical practice is evidence-based or peer-reviewed best practice.
  • Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide person-centred, evidence-based perioperative care.
  • Lead in a specific area of perioperative practice, making recommendations, coordinating projects and developing practice guidelines and policies based on robust evidence.
  • Set and maintain standards of practice, conduct and decision-making as negotiated with Team Leader.
  • Be competent in all relevant Trust IT systems, including EPR, email and other professional media.
  • Promote a paper-light approach to information management and maintain use of email and other communication modes.
  • Demonstrate awareness of accountability, responsibility, duty of care and support education for less experienced staff.
  • Promote effective interpersonal relationships with the multi-professional team to ensure a good team spirit and collaborative, person-centred working.
  • Deputise for Team Leader in absence, demonstrating problem solving for clinical and management issues.
  • Act as shift coordinator, allocating resources and ensuring effective patient care and safety.
  • Be proactive with responsibilities delegated by Team Leader on a rotational basis, including off-duty planning, work allocation and monitoring off-annual leave and sickness/absence.
Person Specification
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)
  • Minimum 3 years experience in anaesthetics and recovery
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Evidence of achievement of an NMC-approved Mentorship qualification
  • Previous substantive management experience of a specific clinical area

Salary

£39,959 to £48,117 a year (pro rata).
