Overview
Working in partnership with the Urology Clinical Lead, Matron, Operational Service Manager, and multidisciplinary colleagues, the post holder will work across organisational boundaries to deliver high‑quality services that meet local and national strategic objectives, quality standards, and performance targets. The post holder will function as an autonomous advanced clinical practitioner, undertaking comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, investigation, treatment, and follow‑up of patients with benign urological conditions.
They will manage complex clinical presentations, make independent clinical decisions, and support the delivery of streamlined patient pathways to improve access, efficiency, and patient outcomes. As a clinical leader within the benign nursing team, the post holder will contribute to the day‑to‑day operational management of services, supporting the delivery of activity, quality, workforce, and financial objectives. They will act as a key resource for specialist knowledge and clinical expertise, providing support, supervision, and mentorship to nursing and allied health professional colleagues.
The post holder will lead and participate in service development, audit, quality improvement, and research activities to ensure practice remains evidence‑based and responsive to patient needs. They will play a pivotal role in educating and developing staff, promoting professional growth and supporting the future workforce.
- Practice in compliance with their registration's code of professional conduct, being responsible and accountable for decisions, actions or omissions at the advanced practice level.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of advanced responsibility and autonomy, including working with complexity, risk or uncertainty in undifferentiated patient consultations.
- Facilitate own professional judgment, identifying when to seek senior support or guidance, and critically reflect on practice.
- Deliver effective communication with colleagues internally and externally, in verbal, non‑verbal and written forms, and maintain thorough accurate documentation in patient records.
- Provide and receive highly sensitive, complex or contentious information relating to patient care, communicating with patients, families or carers with respect, compassion and empathy, including breaking bad news or facilitating difficult conversations.
- Apply a high degree of clinical acumen in decision‑making, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence‑based judgements and/or diagnoses, and to treat, discharge, refer or escalates care as required.
- Competently perform a range of clinical procedures and lead diagnostic investigations required by the service and the scope of practice, such as flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, video urodynamics, men's health, bladder botox and lithotripsy.
- Use professional judgment to manage risk appropriately, prioritising safety and wellbeing of patients, families and carers, especially where there may be complexity and uncertainty.
- Act as a clinical role model, advocate, and leader, innovating and delivering care that responds to changing requirements and local population health needs.
- Commit to a culture of life‑long learning, maintaining a professional portfolio of evidence related to scope of practice, service‑specific capabilities and competencies, aligned with relevant frameworks or credentials.
- Initiate and develop effective relationships, fostering clarity of the AP role within teams and networks to encourage productive and efficient working practices.
- Model the values of OUH, demonstrating a person‑centred approach to service delivery, quality improvement, leadership and management.
- Establish own scope of practice within legal, ethical, professional and organisational policies, focusing on risk management, safety and high quality care.
- Contribute to service development as part of the MDT, advocating for Advanced Clinical Practice roles as part of workforce transformation and innovative change.
