The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership and line management at the Oxford Special Airways Clinic. Working in close collaboration with Professor Ian Pavord, Professor Nayia Petousi and Professor James Chalmers (as well as principal investigators within OUH who conduct airways research) to deliver high quality research.

The post holder will have responsibility for overseeing the management and delivery of studies, in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure that studies are delivered to exceptionally high standards that incorporate Good Clinical Practice regulations. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that research and clinical care is delivered whilst utilising resources effectively and efficiently, continually reviewing the systems and processes to identify areas for improvement.

They will delegate the portfolio of studies appropriately within the airways research team and will also be involved in directly delivering clinical research themselves.

The post holder will act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times. They will be an integral member of the airways team, providing nursing advice, managing the research nursing team, and contributing to innovative solutions to workforce and capacity management.

Provide effective clinical and professional leadership, direct line-management, support and role development for the Research Nurse and Practitioner team, identifying the needs of the group and individuals. Lead in the recruitment, induction, training and supervision of new members of the team.

Act as the main link between the airways research team and the RRDN. Liaise with Investigators / pharmacy / radiology, identifying and reporting any issues and reporting on progress.

Lead in the development of clinical and research policies, procedures, standard operating procedures and risk assessments.

Have a comprehensive knowledge and provide expert professional advice to nurses/practitioners in the team ensuring that the relevant codes of conduct, regulations, policies, protocols and good clinical practice are adhered to.

Ensure ongoing follow up care is provided for patients in clinical studies supported by the airways team, effectively communicating with colleagues and communicates information to participants, families or carers with respect, compassion and empathy.

Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct at all times. Be aware of and implement all relevant University, Trust and Unit policies, procedures and guidelines. Act as a resource, supporting and motivating staff members with special reference to the relevant clinical studies.

The Airways Research Team

Priority areas for bronchiectasis and non‑T2 inflammation research.

There is a major unmet need for treatments that target the 80%+ of patients with bronchiectasis and COPD who have non‑Type 2 driven inflammation. This is mostly caused by cells called neutrophils and excess mucus, both of which currently lack widely available treatments. Our research team is focused on finding new treatments for neutrophilic inflammation and mucus through experimental medicine approaches – where patients receive treatments and patient samples and assessments are used to understand how the treatments work and to provide insights into human biology.

Key priorities are therefore phase 1B to phase 3 trials of novel anti‑inflammatories and mucoactive drugs and detailed phenotyping studies.
