Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Virology

This full-time fixed-term research position within the University of Oxford offers an engaging opportunity to advance knowledge in virology by focusing on chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection and the mechanisms that underlie viral persistence and liver disease. The post sits within a vibrant research group led by Professor Jane McKeating and includes collaboration with clinicians and scientists, including partners at King’s College Hospital in London.
The role is supported by funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) under the UK Research and Innovation awards and runs until 31 December 2028

The successful postholder will work at the interface of experimental virology, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics and computational analysis. Responsibilities include designing and carrying out experiments, testing scientific hypotheses, analysing complex biological data from multiple sources, and contributing to the development of innovative analytical pipelines. There is a strong emphasis on translating mechanistic insights into understanding of disease processes, as well as contributing to the generation of research income and co‑developing new project ideas.
EligibilityCriteria
Applicants must hold, or be close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in virology, biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related discipline
. Evidence of relevant research experience and the ability to manage independent scientific work are essential.
Candidates should demonstrate practical expertise in molecular virology and viral hepatitis research
, experience with quantitative tissue imaging and associated analytical pipelines
, and familiarity with computational methods such as image analysis and single-cell RNA-sequencing approaches
. Proven communication skills — including writing for publication, presenting research, and representing a research group in meetings — will be integral to success. A track record of contributions or authorship in relevant scientific publications is also required.
The position is offered with a competitive UK academic salary range of £39,424 to £43,984 per year
, commensurate with experience and responsibilities.
