Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Impact Engineering Composite Experimenting and Modelling for Aerospace Applications

Begbroke Science Park

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join our Impact and Shock Mechanics research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Begbroke Science Park). The post is funded by ATi/Innovate UK and Rolls Royce and is fixed-term to October 2029.

You will join a world‑leading programme advancing
experimental and numerical methods for predicting the performance of 3D woven composite materials for next‑generation aeroengines
. The role focuses on developing
bespoke high‑rate experimental techniques
and
cutting‑edge simulation tools
within Oxford’s Impact and Shock Mechanics Laboratory.

You will be responsible for:

  • Advancing numerical modelling methodologies for 3D woven composites
  • Designing and conducting high‑rate and impact experiments on 3D woven composite architectures for model validation and material characterization
  • Developing research proposals and leading individual research projects
  • Analysing complex data and generating original research ideas
  • Publishing in high‑impact journals and presenting at international conferences
  • Contributing to group strategy, funding applications, and collaborative projects
  • Liaising with funding bodies and representing the research group externally
  • Supporting laboratory capability, protocols, and scientific guidance within the team

You should possess:

  • A PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong expertise in composite materials, their deformation and failure, and finite element modelling relevant to aerospace or impact applications
  • Experience with high‑rate experimental methods for composite materials and proficiency with CAD/solid modelling tools
  • A strong publication record and experience presenting to external audiences
  • Excellent project‑management skills and the ability to work independently
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external partners
