Job Description & How to Apply Below

UK date and time: 11-September-2026 00:35

Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health. Level 3 Women's Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford OX3 9DU

We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant in Ovarian Biology to join Professor Suzannah Williams’ reproductive biology research group at the University of Oxford.

Funded by Children with Cancer UK, the post will contribute to an exciting project, “Improving Fertility Preservation for Female Cancer Survivors,” which aims to develop better fertility preservation approaches for girls undergoing cancer treatment.

Cancer treatments can have a profound impact on future fertility. This project will investigate how immature ovarian tissue responds to cryopreservation, preconditioning and post-thaw recovery, using a sheep ovary model to develop clinically relevant protocols with the potential to improve fertility preservation for young cancer patients.

Working alongside researchers with expertise in reproductive biology, cryobiology and mitochondrial biology, you will perform laboratory experiments involving ovarian tissue processing, cryopreservation, thawing and culture. You will undertake histological, immunohistochemical and molecular analyses to assess follicle health, mitochondrial function and tissue viability, as well as contributing to microscopy, quantitative image analysis and experimental data interpretation.

You will manage your own research activities within agreed objectives, maintain accurate laboratory records and contribute to the optimisation of experimental protocols. You will also prepare figures and research summaries, participate in laboratory meetings and journal clubs, and have opportunities to contribute to scientific publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate looking to gain substantial hands-on research experience in reproductive biology, molecular biology, cryobiology and mitochondrial biology within a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment.

You will hold a first or upper second-class master's degree (or equivalent) in reproductive biology, biomedical sciences, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, developmental biology or a related discipline. You will have knowledge of ovarian biology, practical laboratory research experience, and the ability to analyse and interpret scientific data. Strong organisational and communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential.

Experience in reproductive tissue culture, cryopreservation, microscopy, molecular biology, mitochondrial assays or quantitative data analysis would be advantageous, but is not essential.

If you are enthusiastic about reproductive biology and translational research and want your laboratory work to contribute to improving fertility preservation for young cancer survivors, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The post is fixed-term for up to 2 years.

Applications for flexible working arrangements are welcomed and will be considered in line with business needs.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Tuesday 15 September 2026. Interviews are expected to take place on or after Thursday 24 September.
