Job Description & How to Apply Below

Location:
- Centre for Medicines Discovery, NDM Research Building, Old Road Campus, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7FZ

The Nuffield Department of Medicine is recruiting a highly motivated Research Assistant in Proteomics to join the Discovery Proteomics Small Research Facility at the Centre for Medicines Discovery. Discovery Proteomics is one of the leading proteomics laboratories in the UK and Europe, bringing together state-of-the-art mass spectrometry technology with collaborations spanning fundamental, clinical and applied research across Oxford, the UK and internationally.

Working within this collaborative research environment, the successful candidate will support both laboratory and data analysis activities. The role will involve preparing samples for mass spectrometry, operating LC-MS/MS instrumentation and high-throughput equipment, and analysing proteomics data using specialist software and statistical tools. They will help oversee the day-to-day running of an LC-MS/MS set-up, work with samples including body fluids, patient tissue biopsies and cell cultures, undertake laboratory quality control, and contribute to the development and implementation of targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry workflows.

The postholder will also track projects and incoming samples, maintain accurate laboratory records, produce reports and visual outputs for collaborators, and contribute ideas to research projects and publications.

It is essential that you hold a Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or analytical chemistry and have practical experience of sample preparation for bottom-up proteomics workflows. Hands-on experience operating mass spectrometers, undertaking basic instrument maintenance, and analysing proteomics data using statistical packages is essential. The successful candidate will combine a methodical and precise approach with strong organisational and communication skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a genuine interest in supporting scientific research within a team environment.

Knowledge of R or Python, experience of high-throughput proteomics and sample-handling automation, or experience with targeted mass spectrometry would be advantageous.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 12 months and is funded by the Department.
