Job Description & How to Apply Below
AI-Enabled Frontend Developer

We're looking for an AI-Enabled Frontend Developer to join HydraB in Oxford, building the web apps and internal tools our teams use every day. If you love getting a working prototype in front of real users within days, and you use AI tools to build faster without switching your judgement off, this one's for you.

THE CONTEXT

The UK's zero-emission transport sector is being built right now. HydraB is at the centre of it - developing the vehicles, hydrogen infrastructure, power systems and energy services that move decarbonisation from ambition to operational reality across bus, coach, fleet and energy markets.

We're building a digital and energy platform for fleet electrification, connecting vehicles, chargers, energy systems and operational data across UK transport. It runs on Microsoft Azure, with Snowflake and Fabric underneath. There's a lot of valuable data, and a lot of teams who need better tools to use it. That's where you come in.

THE ROLE

This is a hands-on frontend role that sits close to the business. You'll work directly with operations, engineering, commercial and fleet teams across the Group. You'll find out what they actually need, put a clickable prototype in front of them fast, and turn the ones that prove their worth into production apps they rely on.

AI coding tools like Claude Code and ChatGPT are a core part of how you'll work. They make you faster, but they don't replace your judgement. You'll know what good looks like, spot when generated code is wrong, and take ownership of what goes live.

Reporting to the Head of Digital, this is an individual contributor role. We can offer it as a permanent position or a 6-month contract, based in Oxford on a hybrid basis

WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY DO
  • Sit down with internal teams, ask the right questions and work out the real requirement - which often isn't the one first asked for
  • Turn those conversations into clickable prototypes quickly, put them in front of users and keep improving them based on what you learn
  • Build the prototypes that prove their worth into secure, maintainable, production-quality web apps on Azure
  • Create interfaces over our operational data - vehicles, chargers, energy and fleet data in Snowflake and Fabric
  • Build reusable components, templates and AI workflows (prompts, skills, MCP integrations) so each build is faster than the last
  • Manage work across several internal customers, set sensible priorities and be clear about what can and can't be delivered
  • Help colleagues use AI-assisted development well, through pairing, demos and clear write-ups
YOU'LL BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU
  • Have 3+ years of commercial frontend development, with production apps you've shipped and supported
  • Have strong modern frontend skills
    - Type Script, React (or similar), HTML/CSS, accessibility, responsive design and API integration
  • Use AI coding tools daily on real projects, and have a clear view of where they help and where they don't
  • Have worked directly with non-technical stakeholders or clients - gathering requirements, managing expectations and saying "not yet" when needed
  • Can explain a technical trade-off to an operations manager and a design decision to an engineer
  • Are a self-starter who can take a loose brief and come back with something concrete
  • Care whether the thing gets used, not just whether it works
NICE TO HAVE
  • Azure experience
    - Static Web Apps, Functions, Entra
  • Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric or other data platforms, plus dashboards and data visualisation
  • Experience building MCP servers, Claude skills or agentic workflows
  • UX skills
    - Figma, user research, usability testing
  • A background in internal tools, consultancy, agency or in-house product teams
  • Transport, energy or fleet sector experience
