The City of Oxnard's Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking energetic After school Program Instructors to be part of our team!
Under general supervision, the After School Program Instructor performs general recreation and human services program duties involving youth; provides instruction or training to program participants; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties; and performs related duties as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThe After school Program Instructor is the entry-level position that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under closer supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties related to recreational and human services programs and activities and may reasonably expect to have the position allocated to the After school Site Leader level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency which meets the qualifications for the higher level class.
SupervisionReceived/Exercised
General supervision is provided by a Recreation/Human Services Leader III or higher level recreation program personnel. An After school Site Leader may provide functional and technical supervision to subordinate recreation leaders or volunteers.
Work ScheduleThese positions work various schedules and at various locations throughout the city of Oxnard and Port Hueneme. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay.
NoteExtra-Help positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the City's benefits plan and policies, this position is not eligible for benefits due to the short duration of employment. In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at will, and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause.
Responsibilities- Provides direct program support for specific recreation and human services activities.
- Provides direct supervision of up to 20 students in grade levels 1-8 in recreation and human services programs or day camps; dispenses equipment; maintains equipment and facilities.
- Responds to questions and concerns from the public and program participants; provides information as appropriate and resolves concerns.
- They are to uphold the essential standards and grant requirements as noted by our partnership with local school districts.
- Provides homework assistance ensuring that it is completed neatly and correctly.
- Provide structured recreational and enrichment activities.
- Provides opportunities for participants to increase their English language fluency and proficiency.
- Implement content area lessons and classroom management strategies taught during professional development trainings.
- Attend assigned Professional Development Trainings during summer and throughout the school year.
- Performs other related duties as is necessary.
- A high school diploma/GED and pass a para-educator examination through the Oxnard School District or Hueneme Elementary School District.
- Completion of a minimum of 48 college credits.
- Be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Some positions may require the possession of or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license.
- A valid First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be obtained within six months of appointment.
- Obtain a Mandated Reporter Training Certificate within six months of appointment.
- Provide current Tuberculosis (TB) test results to the Oxnard School District or Hueneme Elementary School District prior to the first day of employment.
- Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing.
- Two (2) years of voluntary or paid youth program experience.
