The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department, Environmental Resources Division, is seeking a municipal solid waste Sorter who is responsible for identifying, separating, and sorting residential and commercial recyclable, reusable, and non-recyclable materials from incoming solid waste streams. Typical duties include inspecting waste on sorting lines, removing contaminants, placing materials into designated bins or conveyor areas, and ensuring proper handling and disposal of hazardous or prohibited items.
The role also involves maintaining a clean and safe work area, operating basic equipment as assigned, and following safety procedures and facility guidelines to support efficient waste-processing operations.
- Perform sorting of residential and commercial recyclable, reusable, and non-recyclable materials at a high pace from incoming waste streams for the majority of the work shift.
- Segregates recoverable materials (e.g. aluminum, plastic, glass, paper, etc.) from incoming waste, green waste, and or recyclable material, by hand, from material piled on the tipping floor or, by hand, on a moving conveyor.
- Safely and efficiently place recoverable materials into identified containers and ensure all separated materials are sorted into the appropriate piles or bins.
- Assist customers with unloading vehicles in the self-haul area.
- Follow the appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs) as guidelines for the daily operation.
- Report any worker-public safety factors and/or equipment malfunctions.
- Attend weekly/monthly safety/operation meeting.
- Assist other sorters on an as-needed basis with heavy or bulky items.
- Follow all City safety policies and procedures, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and stopping the conveyor belt in emergency situations.
- Inspect incoming loads for unacceptable waste; remove unacceptable items as required and arrange for handling through appropriate processes or by notifying appropriate staff.
- Communicate with equipment operators regarding incoming loads of special waste or other loads that require special attention.
- Maintain a clean workstation and area.
- Empties and cleans waste or material receptacles.
- Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.

Distinguishing Characteristics:This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician in that it performs basic maintenance and operations tasks, including cleaning and/or sorting of recycled materials.
Work Schedule:The standard work week follows a 4/10 schedule, consisting of four days between Monday and Saturday, with working hours from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position may be required to work additional hours in response to workload peaks and changes in department needs. The work schedule is subject to change based on operational needs. This position is governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.

- Performs basic maintenance and operations tasks which may include: cleaning, dusting, sanitizing, maintaining cleanliness of floor finishes, fixtures, windows and other surfaces, opening/securing of building entries, emptying trash and recycle materials, setup/take down of equipment, and/or unloading, sorting and separating materials.
- Maintains activity logs; monitors safety of working and facility conditions; reports maintenance, damage or safety issues; and adheres to safe work practices.
- Monitors supply needs and initiates requests/orders to replenish required items.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
- Sorting and separating recoverable materials from incoming waste;
- Assisting customers with unloading vehicles;
- Assisting other sorters with heavy or bulky items.
- High School Diploma or GED
- One (1) year of maintenance experience
Certifications:
- Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
