Position: Wastewater Operator I

The City of Oxnard's Wastewater Division is seeking a Wastewater Operator I to work with team members within the operations group as well as the Maintenance, Collections, and Laboratory staff. Under general supervision, the Wastewater Operator I performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the monitoring, operation, and minor maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and equipment.

What You’ll Do
  • Monitors plant and field processes including solids processing; monitors computer alarms, instruments, gauges, and meters for process control.
  • Keeps operation logs and records, including meter and gauge readings.
  • Collects samples and performs routine biological and chemical tests/analyses, records sampling and test results, and prepares samples for testing in the central laboratory as needed.
  • Performs general plant, building and ground preventative maintenance, cleaning, and housekeeping duties.

Receives general supervision on routine items which are performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instruction regarding non-routine matters and deadlines.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification is distinguished from the Plant Operator Trainee in that it performs semi-skilled and skilled plant operations and maintenance tasks.

Work Schedule

The Oxnard Wastewater Treatment Plant is staffed 24/7, 365 days per year, including weekends. The Operations group works a 5/40 schedule. Individuals may be assigned to any of the following shifts:
Day 7:30am to 3:30pm;
Swing 3:30pm to 11:30pm; or Grave 11:30pm to 7:30am. Days off may not necessarily fall on a traditional weekend, Saturday/Sunday. Depending on the work assignment, staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours.

In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.

Responsibilities
  • Performs various semi-skilled and skilled plant operations and maintenance tasks; performs operation and minor maintenance of plant systems, processes and/or equipment related to assignment area.
  • Monitors systems, processes and equipment; gathers and records data and information used to ensure proper equipment operations or to determine required maintenance; makes equipment adjustments as instructed.
  • Performs equipment inspections and maintains inspection records; maintains and cleans various equipment, facility areas and grounds; maintains safe and clean site working conditions.
  • Enters and maintains work records, data, files and activity logs.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Additional Details

Positions assigned to wastewater plant operations may be responsible for:

  • Operating treatment systems and related processes;
  • Performing minor facility and equipment maintenance;
  • Monitoring plant and field processes and equipment including alarms, instruments and gauges;
  • Checking pumps, motors, hydraulic lines, structures, pressure tanks and mechanical equipment for proper operation;
  • Collecting samples and performing routine biological and chemical testing;
  • Operating heavy equipment.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience
  • One (1) year of treatment plant operations experience.
License/Certification
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record may be required.
  • Certifications in First Aid/CPR and the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are required within 12 months of hire.
