ROLESUMMARY
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading and managing all maintenance activities within the Betafence Paarl plant, ensuring optimal reliability, availability, and performance of all production equipment, utilities, and infrastructure. The role supports continuous production by minimizing downtime, improving asset life, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (JOB PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES) 1. Maintenance Strategy & PlanningDevelop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance programs.
Establish maintenance schedules aligned with production requirements.
Drive continuous improvement in maintenance systems and reliability engineering.
Manage asset management systems (e.g., CMMS) and maintenance records.
2. Plant & Equipment ReliabilityEnsure maximum uptime of manufacturing equipment (wire drawing, welding lines, coating/galvanizing lines, cutting and fencing machinery).
Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for breakdowns and implement corrective actions.
Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as:
3. Team LeadershipLead, coach, and develop maintenance teams (electricians, fitters, technicians).
Set clear performance targets and conduct regular reviews.
Ensure proper skills development and training (technical and safety).
4. Budget & Cost ControlPrepare and manage maintenance budgets.
Control costs related to spares, contractors, and maintenance activities.
Optimize spare parts inventory to balance availability and cost.
5. Health, Safety & ComplianceEnsure compliance with all safety regulations, including:
Occupational Health & Safety (OHS Act)
Machinery safety standards
Drive a zero-harm safety culture.
Ensure all equipment is maintained to legal and audit standards.
Lead safety audits and risk assessments.
6. Projects & Continuous ImprovementLead maintenance-related capital projects and upgrades.
Support plant improvement initiatives (Lean, TPM, Six Sigma).
Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.
7. Contractor & Supplier ManagementManage external contractors and service providers.
Negotiate service agreements and ensure quality delivery.
Maintain relationships with OEM suppliers and technical specialists.
8. Utilities & InfrastructureManage plant utilities (compressed air, water systems, electrical supply).
Ensure compliance and efficiency of energy usage.
Support sustainability and energy-saving initiatives.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCEStrong knowledge of:
- Mechanical and electrical systems
- Hydraulics and pneumatics
- PLCs and automation systems
- Experience with CMMS systems
- Understanding of reliability and asset management principles
- 5–10 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment
- At least 3–5 years in a management or supervisory role.
- Experience in steel, wire, or heavy industrial processes
